As a veteran, I see many faces of men and women in uniform in a waving flag...not just cloth and color.
I understand that, as my father still serves in the Army, 30 years to 2 months ago, and a Sgt. Major (E8)
My teacher this year was also a veteran, and he told us many times about how many died to keep us free. Our small home class of 16(compared to mid 20's in other classes) would always stand up, and rehearse the pledge, along with the person on the intercom. (That was started a week after Sept. 11th. I don't know why they JUST started it then). On the subject of Sept 11th, when that Wednesday rolled around, around 7:46AM C, he asked the kids in the classroom to take a moment of scilene. There were 5 of us at 7:46:00AM in that room. By 7:47:00AM, there were 11. All 6 that came in stayed quiet, while we heard the comotion in the hall through the closed door. When we would do state wide tests, classes would be all mixed up. When we said the pledge, my class was horrible. Some didn't even STAND UP. It made me mad inside. Someone was outside by their locker when a teacher asked her to say the pledge real quick, or atleast put hand over heart for the last couple of words. She wouldn't, and my teacher overheard and interrupted. She said there was no reason to say it. He got so mad, he slammed the door so hard, that I swear the glass would of broke if he did it again. In 2nd Quarter cooking class, we teamed up w/ Art, and made cracker jacks. The little prize inside was a flag pin(to put on your shirt). I wore that thing every day since then at school. I belive I even wore it to my school dance May 9th. I took more pride in the flag ever since war was declared on Iraq back on March 16th or 17th. I have a big 48-Star flag that covers my whole wall at my fathers house, with a 3 by 5 Kansas flag opposite to it. Over here, I have the identical 50-star flag to the 48(just as big), and yes, another Kansas flag, which I have flown outside a couple times, but not as much until I get a real flag pole.
Have a good day everyone.
