After the relocation of thousands of people because of Hurricane Rita, police knew hundreds of sex offenders could end up in North Texas.
A convicted sex offender from Louisiana who fled after Hurricane Rita is now in jail, but more serious charges are expected to be forthcoming.
38-year-old Matthew Lindsey is charged with failing to register as a sex offender. Police said they're investigating allegations that Lindsey molested two young girls and possibly as many as 11 children during his brief stay in North Texas.
Lindsey called a Richardson motel his temporary home. Some time after evacuating Louisiana, while in a Houston shelter Lindsey befriended two single women, who between them have 11 children ranging in age from 3 to 12.
Sometime last month, all 14 people ended up in Richardson sharing several motel rooms. The children were under his care several times as their mothers left the youngsters with him to run errands.
"It appears the women did not know Lindsey is a convicted sex offender, with multiple offenses including crimes against nature, molestation and fondling children," said Richardson Police Sgt. Kevin Perlich.
Last week, Collin County child advocacy officials began investigating allegations that Lindsey molested two girls ages 6 and 8. Police said it's possible he may have molested several of the children.
There is some encouraging news about this sad story. Recently, the 11 children and their mothers found apartments here, and News 8 has learned they're getting the help they need.
Police said they expect to file more charges against Lindsey very soon
