Reality shows, too much???

#1 Postby azsnowman » Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:10 pm

Ya know......I am so SICK AND TIRED of these ridiculous "reality shows", seems like everytime you turn on the tv there's a new one. Now.......who's the guy that hosted American Idol, now he's got a new show coming up called "Cupid!" if you ask me, it's "Stupid!"

Last evening a 10 year old kid was seriously hurt down in Phoenix recreating a stunt from the movie "Jackass", now come on...........what has society become? A bunch of ppl with no guidence what so ever in their lifes that they have to imitate some "Jackasses?"

Pretty sad if you ask me, yes......it's human nature to *rubberneck* at a car accident, heck, I do, but must we GLORIFY other peoples misfortune and watch someone make a FOOL out of themselves all for the LOVE of self and money, no wonder why I don't watch over 1 hour of tv a night anymore!

Dennis

I agree, Dennis.

And it's not like there aren't a lot of struggling screenwriters out there trying to sell scripts and keep actors in business. But nooooo...Hollyweird wants to film "real" people doing "real" stuff in "real" situations.

Aren't Jerry Springer and wrestling real enough? Oh wait...that's right...they're actually scripted...and crap, I might add.

I agree. I watched the first Survivor, a little interesting. All these new ones though, I don't like.

The kids, they would do that if the movie was never made. THEY ARE STUPID LIKE THAT! Gotta understand some kids go for gold, and they get hurt. It happens.

The show has a warning from MTV... "Don't send in your tapes, because it is a waste of your time, and we're gonna chuck it" or something rather.

It will run its course Dennis. We've all about had it with the themes they are coming up with. I do like watching talented musicians though.
Big question might be...what's the next fad?

How about far left political shows? Will Bevis and Butthead II come back?

Here's an idea. How about a pay-per-view on all channels all the time? No charge whatsoever for cable or satellite or the hookup, just $.25 per hour of viewing...by the program.

The more people tune in, the more revenue for the producers. Now isn't that a novel idea...earning more for being better!

It would also keep us from having mindless drivel running in the background for hours on end.

Heck...we might even read or give someone a call.

For the most part I am not a fan of reality shows, however, I do think that American Idol, Nashville Star, Star Search, and Fame serve a purpose. These shows showcase talent and while they are considered "reality" shows, they are nothing more than televised talent contests.

Things like The Bachelor, Jackass, Paradise Hotel, Mr. Personality are dumb in my opinion.

I was "trying my best" to watch Fear Factor a couple weeks ago as the contestants were attempting to swallow earthworms...and it literally made me sick (nausated me)...

Please bear in mind I'm not some squeamish sissy. I've cleaned high school bathrooms for a living...and saw some raunchy sights, but nothing that ever made me sick at my stomach.

There was an attractive young lady contestant on Fear Factor that night...and she was a Georgia girl (why I was watching). She was a tomboy and proved herself to be a great athlete in the first stunt; but was unable to down the shot glass filled with nightcrawlers....I don't blame her. In fact, I was hoping and praying she'd say "no way...are you people crazy"!! and leave before even attempting such a sickening stunt....that would have told me she had good sense. :D

Would I swallow nightcrawlers...what we Georgians call fish bait for a "chance at $50,000 dollars"? No way in hell. The last time I looked in the mirror I didn't look like either a fool or a largemouth bass. :D

The only way I'd ever eat an earthworm would be if I was starving to death and nothing (and I mean NOTHING else was available)....and it would still probably make me heave....because I nearly did just watching others do it on tv :D

So true. It's more like "Gross Factor" instead of "Fear Factor."

I mean, come on! Find a group of people who are afraid of the dark. Make each one walk solo through a scary looking deserted old farm house at night with only a flashlight, searching for clues. Then have each one sleep alone in a room in that house.

Or get a group of acrophobes to walk along the ledge of a skyscraper (tethered to a safety line, of course).

If fear is going to be a factor, then by gosh, make it one. Not gross stuff like eating bugs or lying in a pit of beetles.

And I can relate to your near-sickened experience. On one ep of Survivor, they made them drink freshly drained blood from a cow. I can stand to see alot of things -- but that was disgusting!

AZ - in regards to paying...good idea. But I would request that news be free.

I agree with you Galveston Duck....I actually enjoy some of the physical stunts on Fear Factor (even though I think the contestants are insane for risking serious injury for $50,000. Only one of six even gets the cash, and the other five get nothing....that's nuts).

One serious injury...even a blown out knee can cost thousands in medical bills. Those men and women on shows like that are either a lot braver than me or a lot crazier than me (probably both :D

Those shows are starting to get on my nerves. Now "The Practice" is having budget problems because of low ratings. The show had to get rid of the higher paid actors. Now what am I going to watch?

I do like the Osbournes. lol. But they are starting to get out of hand with those shows now.

Did you say swallowing earthworms Perry!!?? Good Grief.

I'm a fan of American Idol and Survivor. Like Garrett said, Idol is really just a talent show with a twist. The twist is that it's not just talent, it's marketability. I think that was obvious in the last series. Clay was a much more talented singer IMO. He had a stronder voice and a much wider range that Reuben. Reuben had the "presence" on the stage. He sold the song! :-)

As far as Survivor, I've been a fan since the first show and haven't missed an episode since! I have always enjoyed "people watching" especially in pressure situations. While the situations are contrived in some sense, I love watching the group dynamics as the series unfolds.

Reality TV has driven me to linger in places such as
Discovery, HGTV, TWC, TLC, History channel,
and Comedy Central.

I may as well LEARN something useful, instead of
how to swallow a nightcrawler. I don't even drink
enough margaritas over in the Ladie's Bar to do that!!

Yep Lindaloo....they were seeing who could eat nightcrawlers...two shot glasses full; then spend the rest of their allotted time of three minutes seeing how many more nightcrawlers they could move from one bowl to another...with their mouths....yuck!!

I do like American Idol and I agree with Marshall - I think Clay has the stronger and nicer voice of the two - I am a big fan of his. Ruben is a really nice guy though, I I loved his voice too.

I saw most of the first Survivor and I haven't watched it since. I did watch "Joe Millionaire" - I thought he was pretty cute though!

I like the Osbornes too - but i've only seen some of the re-runs.

The funny thing is that MY MOTHER watches Fear Factor (I can't stomach it - pun intended!). :o

What I'd like to see in "reality" shows is "Food Search"; a show about how people with limited incomes manage to feed their families without overdrawing their bank accounts!

Now, THAT'S "reality"!

Good idea Bill!

As for me, I only watched the second survivor...that's is for the reality shows! I've turned fear factor a handful of times, but that's on a rare occasion.

I really haven't been a fan of the reality shows.

The only two reality tv shows I have watched are American Idol and Fear Factor. I know it sounds silly but I wept like a baby when Clay didn't win. I guess that show got to me. I probably won't watch it next season for that reason. Fear Factor is cool at times. I get grossed out by some of the stuff, but the stunts they prform are cool. I always sit there and wonder to myself if I could do some of those things.

There is one good thing about Fear Factor though. If I am tempted to snack while watching TV, watching someone eat a bowl of sheep brains and a monkey testicle or two can really curb the urge to snack.

 - I know it's not really a joke Bill, but I couldn't help but crack up!

These "reality" shows are as everything in television, for entertainment purposes and $$$ only.
