Police: Mom Went To Work, Left Baby Home Alone

A teenage mother is accused of leaving her baby home alone while she went to work.

A 911 call tipped police off to an apartment at Meadow Ridge, a complex along Mulhauser Road in Butler County on January 20th.

That's where West Chester Police found a four-month-old girl inside alone, sitting in a high chair.

Helen Newman, 19, is charged with child endangering. Newman also has a three-year-old daughter.

On January 20th, police say Newman and the three-year-old left with Newman's mom, leaving the baby alone.

Newman went to work at Buffalo Wild Wings and that's when police say the three-year-old starting telling her grandma her baby sister was home alone.

The grandma went back to the Meadow Ridge apartment to check if the baby was inside, but the doors were locked.

That's when she called 9-1-1, explaining to dispatchers the conversation she had with the three-year-old.

"We kept saying 'no, your mommy said she took her to a baby-sitter' and we were saying 'who came and picked her up?' She's like 'nobody. Nobody. Nobody came and picked her up, she's at home, and she's at home in Mommy's apartment by herself'" said Patrick Eilerman of West Chester Police.

When police got inside, they found the baby girl was fine, seated in a high chair, propped up with towels.

"The child didn't make a sound the whole time we were there. She was calm and quiet," said Eilerman.

But the house wasn't quiet. Investigators say Newman left loud music on, possibly part of an effort to cover up if the baby started to cry.

"When you get a report like this, or read a report like this, you read it again to be sure you're completely understanding. Let me read this again," said Sergeant Brian Reboltz of West Chester Police.

Investigators say the baby was only home alone for about 45 minutes.

Both of Newman's children are now staying with grandparents.

Newman will be back in court next month.

She had nothing to say when 9News reporter Deb Silverman talked to her through her apartment door Friday.

Thats the wonderful thing about children this age, they have no thought process to consequences of telling such things. They are truthful. And thank goodness. The 4 month old probably could not hurt himself, but can you just imagine your baby sitting there screaming to eat or be held, and no one there to attend to him. Very upsetting. The ignorance of some people. I hope she never is able to have her children back as well, I doubt she will.

Sometimes a young child (3 years old) has more sense then the parents. Thank goodness the 3 year old continue to tell her story and the grandmother checked the her story out.

Yes indeed, thank goodness this little girl kept telling the story, over and over. Convinced her sister was home alone. As she was leaving the apt., she probably even said something to the mother. Who tuned her out, no doubt.

Kids are truthful. This is an excellent example of how truthful.

What worries me though, is the children are with Grandparents. Which is good, family is caring for the children. But this mother will likely see them again, somehow. And she should have her parental privileges revoked immediately and forever. Her behavior is despicable.

I can't get the image of this baby propped up in a high chair, padded with towels to boot, sitting there, waiting to be fed or held, or just cuddled. Like you Kelly, that breaks my heart too.
