Local Radio Jock Swims the Bay to raise $ for Slain Cop Fam.

(Norfolk, VA, Tuesday, July 1st, 2003, 12:30 p.m.) Z104 radio personality Brandon Stokes, better know as "Shaggy" swam from Willoughby Spit Beach to Buckroe Beach Tuesday to raise money for the family of slainVirginia Beach police officer Rodney Pocceschi.

Originally a "Torture Tuesday" stunt the Morning Zoo team decided to turn Shaggy's swim into a charitable event to help the officer's wife and baby. Stokes jumped into the bay just after 6:30 Tuesday morning. Strong currents, high winds, and rain kept him floating off course. The Coast Guard insisted he ride in a boat through the ship's channel.

"Shaggy" swam most of the way but had to be pulled by a jetski and boat to steer clear of the bridge. He swam next to the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. Stokes says he was stung by about 20 jellyfish, but that he'd do the swim again. As of noon the effort raised a couple thousand dollars including a one thousand dollar donation from the "Hooter's Girls".

"Shaggy" says the one thing that kept him pushing through the rough water was the thought of the Officer's son. The nine month old boy will grow up without knowing his dad. Shaggy and the rest of the Z104 team wanted to let the boy's mother know Hampton Roads is here for the Pocceschi family.

A fund has been established for the Pocceschi family. Donations can be made at the Virginia Beach Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union. 2501 Courthouse Drive or 4164 Virginia Beach Boulevard in Virginia Beach. Make checks payable to Maria Pocceschi.

St Louis Metropolitan Police Department has an organization called "Backstoppers", which helps provide for the needs of widows and children of officers slain in service; lately, I haven't had the extra $$$ to contribute, but I do what I can, when I can.
