Some people are idiots.
NEW YORK — A car rental agency near New York's La Guardia Airport was evacuated Thursday after employees discovered a loaded gun in a trunk and a suspicious device that turned out to be harmless, police said.
The device was a clock taped to two road flares with black tape, according to police spokesman Michael O'Looney. He said a bomb squad determined the clock could not have ignited the flares, and he described it as a hoax.
Police were looking for the person who rented the car on May 23.
The car had not been returned by the renter and instead was retrieved by the agency because it was overdue by several days, according to David Gilman, a spokesman for National Car Rental. He said records regarding the car and the person who last rented it had been turned over to police.
Rental agency workers summoned police to the scene at about 10:45 a.m. after discovering the gun -- a Tech-9 semi-automatic weapon -- and the device. The car was parked on the second deck of a garage, and police blocked off the area.
The incident followed reports of suspicious packages Wednesday that led police to shut down three major subway lines in New York. The Brooklyn Bridge was also shut down temporarily after a caller told police he had been offered money to drive a car onto the span. None of the reports Wednesday proved a danger to the public.

Yep, idiots!! I hope that person spends some time behind bars for doing this.
Some people will always take the opportunity to scare people....just for fun. Those people need to get a life!! Unfortunately, it is likely that one of these times it won't be a hoax.
All we can do is go on with our lives as usual but be aware at all times and report anything suspicious....oh and PRAY a lot!

A TEC-9 looks a lot more vicious than it actually is; it looks like a small PPSH-40-type submachine gun design, but it only fires one 9mm shot per trigger squeeze, and has a very short barrel for it's overall size (even though it has a "ventilation sleeve"), with a 10-shot external "clip" magazine.
One of these was used by those two thugs at Columbine, if you recall; it is unreliable except at extremely close range (7 yards or less), and very hard to conceal or carry.

Let's hope all goes well tomorrow. I am gong to be on the National Mall, in DC. They are checking everyone who walks in and no vehicles are to be let in. It will be a long line to get in, but it's worth it in security terms.
I will try to let you all know Saturday how it goes. Let's hope we all make it through the next day safely.

How annoying. People actually want to fool around like this... makes no sense. We shouldn't be surprised if there are problems tomorrow, hope and prayer that we all have a great Independence Day 2003!
Colin, I just calculated your distance from LaGuardia International Airport in New York City, New York and got approximately 85 miles slightly north of due east of you. You consider this very close to you?
