how do you cook a baked potato in the microwave?

how do you cook a baked potato in the microwave?

Wrap it in Saran Wrap, poke a lot of holes in it with a fork, and set to high for 7-10 minutes. You can check it by poking it with your finger to see if it's done or not.

After you've cooked it for the 7-10 minutes - the first half of time on high, the final half on medium (depending upon the size), wrap it in aluminum foil for another 10. It will continue to "cook" within the foil from its own heat.

Best and only way to bake a potato is to bake it. In the microwave, it's more like steamed. But if you cook it in the microwave only to a point, then let it cook itself in the foil, it's a little less mushy. I know what you mean though -- nothing worse than a soggy potato.

What they said :uarrow: You can't put too many holes in it to let the steam out and to prevent it from exploding. That may reduce the sogginess too.

I will add a caution not to put foil in the microwave unless you like fireworks.

We have a potatoe setting, so all we have to do is put the potato in the microwave (making sure it has been covered with fork holes so it doesnt blow up), close the door, and push the potato button. Within seconds, it starts cooking, and we walk away waiting for it to beep when they are done. I dont pay any attention to how long it takes to cook because it tastes really good and its cooked all the way through.

A potato setting!

Maybe I'm getting old, but it seems that microwaves are getting harder to use rather than easier. I'll stick with a power selector and a time selector. Preferably knobs rather than buttons. The microwaves at my work have so many buttons and selections that I get all confused. I have to guess.......

I learned this trick from my sister-in-law. Wash the potato and poke holes in (I use a small paring knife). Wrap in a damp paper towel and cook in the micro on high for 3-4 minutes (depending on the size of the potato). If it isn't done return it to the micro for another minute (re-dampen the paper towel if its dry). They come out wonderful every time. Give it a try and see what you think.

(Oven is still the best but these are pretty good too) :)

Don't ~ever~ forget to prick the skin, numerous times, with a fork. Otherwise they'll explode and make a huge mess.

If that does happen, bowl a cup of water for 5 minutes in the microwave. Carefully remove the hot mug and then wash out the microwave. The boiling water creates steam on all the surfaces and dried on food washes off easily this way. In fact this is how I clean my microwave on a regular basis. I don't even mess with wiping it out dry, I create the steam first.

My husband can always tell if a baked potato had been prepared in the microwave or real oven. He likes the crunchy skin, so it's oven only. Otherwise I have to hear about it - this potato is mushy, the skin is too soft. Men!

WOW! Miss Mary I just did that cleaning my microwave and what a difference it makes!!!! Instead of trying to scrub off all the dried up junk!!!!

Thanks for the tip!!!!!! :D Thats how I will be cleaning my microwave from now on!!!!!!!! :D 8-)
