TN Pastor slain, amber alert issued for 3 daughters

#1 Postby alicia-w » Thu Mar 23, 2006 10:20 am

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued a statewide Amber Alert Thursday morning after a West Tennessee pastor was found murdered and his family missing.

The missing persons were Breanna Winkler, age 1; Mary Alice Winkler, 6, who is 3 feet tall and weighs about 40 pounds; Patricia Winkler, 8, who is 4 feet tall and weights about 60 pounds. All are white females. The two older girls have dark brown hair.

They were possibly with their mother, Mary Winkler, who is 32, 5-foot-3, and weighs about 120 pounds.

They were believed to be traveling in a gray 2006 Toyota Sienna van bearing Tennessee license plates NDX-288.

They are missing from Selmer in McNairy County, where the husband and father, Matthew Winkler, was found dead in a bedroom of the parsonage of a Church of Christ, where he was the minister.

When he didn't appear for a worship service Wednesday night, members of the church went to the parsonage and found him dead, police said.

TBI spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson said there were no signs of forced entry at the parsonage.

Very sad story. Something very strange about it too... no sign of forced entry, wonder if the wife/mother had something to do with it? That was my first thought when I found out she was also missing.

They found the wife and kids down on the Alabama coast, sounds like she did it and ran off.

Now we have to wonder what her motive was -- will she claim he was abusive, adulterous, or molested the kids, or that she was insane...or that God, the devil, or the TV told her to do it?

I'm very curious to see this one play out. Maybe it was the preacher who had everyone fooled, maybe it was her, maybe it was both. Whichever instance it is they sure played it well because it seems like the whole town is totally floored.

My money's on he was abusive or he wanted her to make a change in their lives that she didn't want.

My husband thinks there was something up with the preacher too....maybe we'll hear more later today...reguardless, she should not have run...if she did kill him...maybe she didn't know he was dead and she was fleeing for safety...maybe he killed himself after she took the kids and left...speculation...

I'm with you there. The middle daughter (bottom, left) doesn't look like a very happy child. There could be something to read in those eyes.

Man remains jailed in slaying

Garland: Wife appears to have died of blunt-force trauma, authorities say

By TANYA EISERER / The Dallas Morning News

GARLAND, Texas - A man accused of killing his wife and then calling police to tell them what he had done remained in the Garland city jail on Sunday.

Theophilus Ojukwu, 46, was held on one count of murder in the slaying of his wife, Melvina Ojukwu. Bail was set at $500,000.

Authorities have said the Garland man called police Saturday evening from a Mesquite hotel and told them he had killed his wife and then fled with their four children. Authorities discovered Mrs. Ojukwu's body in a bedroom of the family's home in the 5400 block of Barcelona Drive.

She appears to have died from blunt-force trauma to the head, police said Sunday.

Mr. Ojukwu was arrested at the hotel, where Child Protective Services took custody of the children.

Neighbors have said the couple came from Nigeria and settled in the neighborhood about eight years ago. They were shocked by what had happened and described the couple as quiet and reserved. They also thought Mr. Ojukwu worked as a truck driver.

Police have said officers were called to the home in October on a domestic violence report.

Marissa Gonzales, a CPS spokeswoman, said the children, who range in age from 4 to 9, have been placed in the same foster home.

"We haven't found any relatives at this point," she said. "I don't think they [the children] completely understand what's happened."

Ms. Gonzales said it's her understanding that the children were in the home at the time of the killing. But she did not know whether they witnessed their mother's slaying.

Police: Infidelity Not Behind Pastor's Slaying
Friends Say Pastor's Wife Apologized

POSTED: 8:53 am EST March 27, 2006

SELMER, Tenn. -- The preacher's wife charged with murder in the death of her husband wanted his congregation to know "she was sorry for everything she has done," said a friend who visited her in jail Sunday.

Church member Pam Killingsworth visited Mary Winkler after Sunday services and said the preacher's wife gave no indication why her husband of 10 years was shot.

"She just said she was sorry and for me to write a note to the church saying that she was sorry for everything she had done," said Killingsworth as she walked away from the jail in tears.

Winkler, 32, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of her husband, Matthew Winkler, the preacher at the Fourth Street Church of Christ in this small town 80 miles east of Memphis.

Her initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

The congregation held its first Sunday services since the shooting death and were warned by elder Robert Shackelford not to speculate about why their popular, young minister was killed.

Friends have described the Winklers as a happy couple with no outward signs of discord, and authorities have refused to talk about a motive for the murder.

"Perhaps over time we will better understand why this has happened," Shackelford said at an adult Sunday school class. "Be very cautious about what you say or even what you think."

Mary Winkler was locked up at the McNairy County jail after being returned Saturday from the coast of Alabama, where she and her three young daughters were found by police following a multistate search.

Church members found 31-year-old Matthew Winkler dead in a bedroom of the couple's parsonage Wednesday night after his family missed a church service. Mary Winkler and the children were nowhere to be found.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has refused to discuss a motive, but said investigators did not believe it was because of infidelity. The agency refused comment on whether Winkler had been accused of domestic abuse. Court papers offered no hint on a motive.

After Mary Winkler's arrest, an Alabama judge released her children -- Breanna, 1; Mary Alice, 6; and Patricia, 8 -- to the custody of their paternal grandparents in Henderson.

Neither the grandparents nor the Winkler children attend the church services Sunday. No relatives of Mary Winkler attended either.

Shackelford urged the congregation to pray for the children, their grandparents and Mary Winkler. "Mary is a member of this church family," he said, adding that forgiveness is a cornerstone of their faith.

"If we don't have forgiveness, then we don't have anything," Shackelford said.

Church elder Wilburn Ashe reminded members that only a few facts about the killing were known for sure - Matthew Winkler is dead, his wife is in jail, and their children are without their parents.

"Those children have got a good home that they're in, but it's not mama and daddy," Ashe said.

The church must hold together, he said, and not be torn by speculation and loose talk about the slaying.

"We've got to do two things," Ashe said. "We've got to remain close to God and we've got to remain close to one another."

Members put up a large bulletin board in a church hallway covered with snapshots of the Winkler family.

Photos showed the older Winkler children playing basketball, posing with kittens and rolling in the snow with their father. Matthew Winkler flashed a big smile in one photo taken at a church social while balancing plates of food in each hand.

Other snapshots showed Mary Winkler laughing and holding her youngest daughter up for the camera.

Mary and Matthew Winkler were married in 1996. They met at Freed-Hardeman University, a Church of Christ-affiliated school in Henderson where Matthew's father was an adjunct professor.

Matthew Winkler's funeral is scheduled for Tuesday in Selmer.
