Spring Cleaning

#1 Postby weatherlover427 » Fri Mar 31, 2006 6:31 pm

Who all does spring cleaning and if you do; what are some of the things you do for it?

I do it usually; but I don't know when I will do mine for this year yet. I usually do the following:

1. Major dusting.
2. Scrub all my floors with Pine-Sol or Comet and wipe them down thoroughly.
3. Vacuum behind as much of my furniture as possible.
4. Wash all my laundry. Even what I don't wear.
5. Give the bathroom a thorough cleaning.
6. Wipe down the stove and oven.

Etc...

So let's hear your spring cleaning stories. :)

We are summer and hot all year around here. Our houses are open a lot so every single day is a spring cleaning day. I wash my ceramic tile floors once or twice a week, pledge everything once a week. Clean windows about once a month and wash and do everything else daily. I am constantly cleaning. When I get pretty much caught up, I do cupboards and drawers.

Yeah that's true, you are in a much warmer climate there than we are here. I just tend to do it a bit later in the year though (as in May or so) since April can still be kind of cool here; as is the case this year (April 1-7 will only be in the low 60s with lows near 50  ).

I usually

-Clean out closets, stuff that doesnt fit the kids anymore, and things I haven't put on in years.
-Scrub the front porch walls, and roof they are a metal siding and seem to attract dirt ecspecially when all the windows are left open all during the previous summer.
-Scrub the door jams where little hands always rub all year. Pretty nasty.
-Most of windows, the ones I don't tend to do all year, like the bedroom ones.
-Weed the beds in the yard and re mulch, and prepare an area for my vegi garden. Trim all bushes and hedges and rake. Re-pot plants that need it.
-Try to pressure clean the driveway, its about 80-90 ft. long and 6 ft. wide and 12 ft. wide in the back. During the rainy season it gets yucky and slippery.
-Clean the face of the cabinets in the kitchen.
- Wipe down the walls in the kids room where there feet rub the walls when on their bed, and also their bed frames, they are painted white.

I have done about 3 1/2 of all those so far. Yard stuff is next. I am sure there will be more stuff done, but that is the basics. With 3 kids, 2 dogs, a cat, and 3 fish I am always cleaning something somtime. And it seems to get dirty quick.

Hey - want to spring clean my house?

I'm impressed!

When I spring clean, it's usally room by room. But I start with cobwebs, up high, on cold air registers, etc. Then the windows, woodwork and doors (stained). Then I hose-vacuum silly things like lamp shades and hard to reach crevices the floor vac can't . Finally, the furniture and clutter, then lastly vacuum or mop the floor.

But I'm not on a schedule, I just ~try~ to fit this in when I can. It helps to have a good reason. Last year we had a HS graduation party for my oldest daughter. 70 invited, about 45 came. That was a major ordeal and I did stress out about it. Because it was daylight - you could really see the grime! I prefer evening parties, where you light candles and dim the overhead lights. LOL

Generally, spring cleaning for me is cleaning the outside patio furniture, washing the windows inside and out, wash the curtains, powerwash the outside of the house and cleaning up the yard. Also, moving my winter clothes to one closet and bringing out my summer clothes.

All through the year I clean out the refrigerator, move the furniture to vacuum behind it, scrub the vinyl floors and apply Future to them, dust. I don't do it every week mind you, but each weekend I try and do one "big" thing along with the regular weekly vacuuming, cleaning the bathrooms and at least mop the floors.

Steph - you're just a show off.....he he My mom is always telling me to clean like this. Take one room a week and spring clean it. Not every room would be cleaned like this but if you did your whole house this way, on a rotating schedule, then spring cleaning wouldn't be necessary.

I do clean my kitchen this way. I like to clean out the entire fridge and freezer, once a month or even more, depending upon if we're having company over. I dump out old ice and start over. Take everything out just about and wash it. Stove gets cleaned like this too.

Maybe this should be a new plan for me. Since I'm working part time again. Good idea - just hope I can implement it. Completely makes sense too.

That's something I failed to list above. Cleaning my refrigerator and stove. I just don't like to let it sit open for a long time because:

1) The food might go bad; and
2) I don't want the fridge motor to have to work too hard.

But that is a very good idea. Mine kind of needs it right now actually, it's way too crammed.

Here's another reason to clean out the fridge on a monthly basis - to check condiment sell by dates. My husband got very sick on bad cocktail sauce we had at home. He called home from work, yes that's where he was when it hit and I checked the date - expired. Very. I felt so bad! That taught us a lesson, we even re-read a date before using it (sour cream, mayo, salad dressing, tartar sauce, etc.). Once you start reading the dates, you start wiping up spills and before you know it, you're washing everything. I like to see clean veggie crispers too, w/o shriveled up carrots!

I would think you could do this little by little, do the door items at one time. Then the crisper drawers another. The next day, shelves and later, the freezer?

I should do that with my fridge. It's definately not THAT often! I am a stickler for checking the dates on the things in the fridge and pantry. :)

Your spring cleaning is regular cleaning for me but we only wash the dirty clothes.

Spring cleaning to me is going thru the closest and getting rid of the clothes i know i won't be wearing again. Scrubbing the baseboards with a toothbrush (yes i actually do that! I can't stand the crud that builds up from mopping). Vacuuming the light shades, getting the dustmop and getting rid of the cobwebs you couldn't see in the winter. Weeding and mulching of the flowerbeds.

Well I live in an apt. complex so I don't have any gardening to do :P .

But sometimes (most often in spring though, no later than the end of June though cause otherwise it's too hot) I will scrub off my ceiling fan and the intake grill of my central heat / fan (we lack air conditioning here  ). I'll also wash off my oscillating and stand alone fans; as well as sometimes actually going through all my old crap and throwing stuff out.

Yes I do it THAT rarely! :P
