Horses and Police

#1 Postby Janice » Fri Apr 28, 2006 11:09 am

We are just as modern as the US. We also have brand new police cars and motorcycles.

But, we also have police who ride horses. Mostly, I think for parades, demostrations, etc.

Does your city or town have police riding around on horses too?

You bet. No punk is going to stand up to a mounted policeman.

We just recently added two horses to our police force. I believe the horses' first assignment was Mardi Gras. Unfortunately one of the horses broke through his fence and was hit and killed by a car.

At Mobile International Speedway they police on horseback and direct cars where to park.

In Pascagoula, they ride horses during parades and at the fair.

Not sure about here in Harrisburg but at home in the UK they are used in the big cities. Most European countries have them as you will see when the riots kick off in Germany for the soccer world cup. I am sure the mounted police will be out.

Knowing my department, they'd issue us "Shetland Ponies!"

I've seen Dade Country use police on horseback in crowd control situations.

Yep, we have them around here. You see them mostley in parades and such as you mentioned. But they do have them on duty, in the more rural areas. I just love to see them too, hear that clickitiy clack of them walking past. Every now and then you will see a truck and trailer parked on the side of the road in my neighborhood and they have a horse patroling around here. Oh yea and when I used to go Down Town(only 5 minutes away) to party some at night on the weekends they were always on patrol there, along with bike cops.

We dont have them here in Hampton but Virginia Beach does. They are beautiful horses. Besides the obvious advantages to having a cop on horseback the horses are a great public relations tool, as a lot of kids (and grownups too  ) are fascinated by the horses and stop to look at the animal and talk to the officer.
