WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A West Palm Beach man is dead after he was struck by a bolt of lightning while talking to his neighbor about the upcoming hurricane season.
Sixty-five-year-old Harold Bennett was standing outside his home wearing sandals and no shirt when he was hit in the back of his head about 6:30 p-m yesterday.
Judy Thompson says she was talking with Bennett when he was hit.
Thompson says the retired gardner was taking garbage outside when he spotted her rearranging furniture.
She told Bennett that she was preparing for hurricane season.
The two were standing about 25 feet away when Bennett was hit.
Thompson wasn't injured.
A forecaster with the National Weather Service says yesterday's storm brought about 530 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in Palm Beach County between five and six p-m.
