Vegetarians

#1 Postby Janice » Sat Jun 17, 2006 6:55 pm

Are there any vegetarians here? What basically do you eat all day?

Do you find that being a vegetarian that you are at the weight you desire and you do not have the weight problems that people who eat meat do?

I am. I like any type of vegetable. I also eat seafood, believe it or not. I will eat chicken if it is in a casserole.

I am not thin and I am not fat either.

My SO was vegetarian when we got together. However, that didn't last long with my corruption. I enjoy meat (poultry most of all, but red meat from time to time, and seafood as often as I can afford it).

However, I decided after a few years to try my hand (mouth? stomach?) at vegetarianism.

It lasted about 3 months. But we found that my body just isn't able to handle no meat. I had serious problems eating enough to make up for the lack of meat, and some of my medical problems (I have many) became worse.

I admire vegetarians. But I'll never try to be one again!

As for weight, being a veggie doesn't automatically make it easier to be at a good weight. You can overeat just as easily. Many vegetarians eat junk too! Sure, what you're eating might be healthier, but when you overeat, what you're eating doesn't matter much (especially if you're thinking you can eat more since it's healthier... calories are calories!)

As I mentioned in another thread I rarely eat meat anymore. I so like some types of seafood though. Hated veggies when I was a kid, love them now.

My second boy got all caught up with the idea of becoming completely vegan... so I let him go for it... gotta admit we learned some neat ways to make veggie meals (one thing great about this area is you can "spice" up just about anything!) Even learned places to get some of the meat substitutes products...a lot of which were yucky and tasted like cardboard, but others were suprisingly tasty... but being a science geek, wasn't too impressed with the high fat content a lot of 'em had. Loma Linda, and Worthington... remembered we ate a lot of their products.. the fake bacon was the worst IMO... naaaaaaaaaaaaasty; but the chili was surprisingly good...dunno what that soy product they had in there was but it tasted just like meat to me.

Anyway... it lasted about 5-7 months till we said the heck with it and splurged at a local Mickey-D.... gotta admit that I've reduced my meat intake ever since; but will never turn down a good steak...and seafood... well, if you don't like seafood around here that's positively sacrilegious!

Yes, I don't think you can beat a good steak. John likes the thicker ones, I like them with a bone, T-Bone or Porterhouse. And put them on the bbq, icing on the cake. :D

My mother is vegetarian. She considers egg, seafood, and poultry meat as well. I never understood the point of being vegetarian if you ate fish and chickens, but that is beside teh point. She is in no way a waif, and the doctors always compliment her on how she has perfect health stats like cholesterol, blood pressure etc. I guess its b/c we're indian so there is a lot of different veggie foods she can eat. Breads, lentils, fruits, spices veggies, rice. Its amazing the things you can make that are just rice or corn based.

I'm a vegetarian too, since the day I was born. During the day I usually eat bread with cheese. In the evening it's usually vegetables with rice, potatoes and tofu.

Since I'm not a sportsman and I don't do any excersized or anything like that, being a vegetarian probably helps me keep the weight that is needed for my length. It's really hard for me to gain any weight.

JQ is your mom here in the US also? If so has she found it to be easier or more difficult to stay on the vegetarian diet. IOW, are the different vegetables she is used to available here or is it harder to keep a variety in the diet?

Actually anyone can answer that, but I directed it at JQ since he mentioned their ethnicity and the variety and I wondered if it was easier or harder here.

we are trying very hard to eliminate beef from our diet. we love it but are trying to eat healthier. we eat more fish and seafood than chicken and eat a lot of meatless meals. chile rellenos, cheese enchiladas, eggplant, hummus, stuff like that. but we are in no way vegetarians.

For those that are completely vegan or vegetarian, I completely respect your beliefs, but, I hope you take supplemants, b/c being vegan or vegetarian offers an unbalanced, incomplete diet for humans and later in life serious issues could occur..mainly fragile bones and the inability to have or make children for males and females (if that's what you want to do later).
