For the ladies - more hair questions!!!
Hey all - I am finally, finally ready to see a professional. After having had the worst haircut of my entire life almost exactly 2 years ago - June 23, 2004. Yep, worse than when my mom cut my bangs in 5th Grade - they went up an inch higher on one side and yes that week we had school pictures taken. LOL!!!
I've been trimming the ends of my extremely short hairstyle from 2 years ago until it was all one length and it's there now. More than really.
My question is this - I am in a real quandary of where to go.
1. I could finally breakdown and see my next door neighbor. She is a topnotch, highly respected hairdresser in the Cincinnati area. And I've seen her work (many neighbors go to her). She has many Cincinnati celebs as clients (ballplayers, their wives, politicians). So I know she's good. Pricey though but if she'd give me the cut I want, I'd be 150% thrilled. And she doesn't scalp people - what a relief! When you hit my age many hairdresssers take one look at you and I know think - oh washed up mom here, let's give her a very short do. NO!
2. Or go back to my former trusty male (hetero I might add, married with 6 kids) hairdresser from oh 1986 until 3 years ago when he gave me a cut I was just not happy with. Shocked really b/c he never did that - it was short too. Another short cut I did not want! But I did ask for a new style so I can't blame him like the one from 2 years ago (Nina's former hairdresser).
3. Or go with a completely new referral in my area, of which I have a few excellent ones. But I'd be taking a huge chance again. I have such a low opinion of this profession right now but I know I've got to trust them again.
Oh - the dilemma, the dilemma!
If I could cut my hair the way I want it, I would do it. I swear I would. But I've decided my hair is best cut into a newer, updated bob, slightly shorter at the back, angled down to the chin, blown dry straight, only slightly bent and pieced out with pommade. I can't pull this look off. I know it's time to see a professional.
Here's my main dilemma and it's been there since my next door neighbor moved in (1989) - what IF I don't like the cut she gives me? I will be stuck, forever her client.
Thanks so much. Now you men be kind.......just leave us women who are fussy with their hair probs alone. Oh I'm one of them - that's for sure!!!!

God, I am in the same boat. I had longer hair, then cut it short myself. It looks horrible. The only thing I can do is let it grow out some and go to a salon that is up to date with the latest styles. I should have done that before cutting it myself.
Good luck, Mary
My suggestion... go to a good salon with young girls who are up to date with the latest styles... look at how they have their hair cut.
Sometimes I find a cute haircut in a magazine and take that with me to show them what I want.

I do want someone young which sounds odd but if I see hairdressers with wacky styles, tatto's and that whole vibe, I swear that just might be MY hairdresser. Not that I want blue hair or a tatto but at least someone that age would up on the latest styles and techniques.
One of my favorite styles right now are the choppy looking ones. It's a longer style than a bob (I'm just about there) and cut very, very blunt. Then each layer up is cut very choppy like. The style is blown dry very straight, then using a flat iron for more effect, with pommade. But I worry I'm too old for this style.
Have you ever looked at those hairstyle magazines? I spent at least 15 minutes flipping thru them and I swear none of those models looked as if they mingled in the real world. More like the model runway world - Paris or New York. I live in conservative Cincinnati! I want a real hairstyle for real women!!!!
A good friend of mine cuts her own hair and she chunks it out with the scissors they use on bangs - they have wide spaced teeth. She swears by these scissors. She picks up sections and just chunks it out. Her cut looks so professional. I don't quite have the guts to do that though.
I've considered buying a wig and practicing! This is what that awful hairdresser did to me 2 years ago - took all confidence I had in that industry away. I should have written her a note afterwards but I never did.
Thanks for the reminder to go for someone younger. Good idea.

Go with someone new. If your neighbor cuts your hair and you don't like it, you'll always remember that. The old stylist you used to go to? You lost your trust in him.
I love my salon. I could go to any of the stylists there, I trust all of them so much. Sure I've had some cuts i wasn't crazy about but hey, it's only hair and it'll grow out.

I had no clue was a flowbie was, so I went and googled it. I have never heard of such a thing. Interesting. I have to say that is one of the wierdest things I have seen. Makes sense though, I guess it pulls the hair and you get an even cut. Hmmm. I cut the whole familys hair here, including myself.

I'm NOT laughing - Marty uses the flowbee on his hair and his sons AND his mother's! It does a great job and he's offered to do mine but, uh, NO!!

I guess I would try one of your newly recommended salons. I'd hate to get a haircut from my neighbor and hate it, only to be totally indebted to her. You haven't been back to your other salon for a while, so by now he probably got the hint. Bring a couple of those magazines with you to show the new stylist.
I've been going to my stylist, a man, for almost 20 years. I'd hunt him down if he ever left!

That sounds a little like the DIY shag cuts girls gave themselves when I was in high school. You'd say goodbye to a friend with all one length hair (to her waste, parted in the middle, that was the "look" back then!) and the next day, she'd have layered hair. Everyone would crowd around and inspect her new haircut.
I'm leaning towards not using my neighbor although all that go to her love her cuts. She's more into longer styles, which is unheard anymore and with a hairdresser her age (49). I would not be a bit surprised if she told me she's even cut Nick Lachey's hair, since he's from here. I know she has an excellent reputation but all these years I just kept telling I was devoted to my former male hairdresser (with the six kids, hubby teased me for years he's gay!). She still thinks I go to him. I would but he's stuck in a rut, a very short, hello I'm a K-mart dressing housewife now rut. No thanks! Sorry if that offends anyone but I'm not ready for the gray's to show, to wear boring tops with little flowers on them and my mom's ortho shoes!
I'm keeping that 40 mindset going for a quite a while yet....LOL
Thanks for the advice all. Appreciate it. It's funny, I told my family it's time to seek a professional. And no one disagreed with me! Yikes (it must look bad!). 2 years ago when I tackled the hack job Nina's hairdresser gave me, they all breathed a sigh of relief. Hubby even said that's not such a bad idea Mary (cutting it myself), you can't do any worse than the cut you just got!
Now it's just in need of a thorough cut. By someone who is not always correcting the way their hand goes in the mirror (the back part is tricky, the rest easy).

How about this? They usually have the most up to date and experienced staff. The prices for a cut didn't seem outrageous and I've found that spas usually have a consultation to determine what the exact style you want. There is a large gallery of pictures of clients and hairstyles. Perhaps you see one that might appeal.

Ok Mary, I am also one of those cut it myself people who doesn't have much faith in the hairstylists either.
I have a tendency to check out what they look like first. If they have SCARY hair I won't go to them, because obviously they think that is a good look and I don't want to end up looking like them.
I do occasionally mess up my hair when I cut it, but it grows back pretty quickly. (and at least I didn't pay for the mess up)
I would love to have the convenience of a neighbor to cut my hair, but I do understand the dilemma of hurt feelings if you chose never to go back to her. What if you told her your stylist was out of town and could she do your hair "just this once". That way if you didn't like it you wouldn't have any obligation to go back to her,(and no hurt feelings) but if you did like it you could then be free to use her regularly.
It sounds like you have a very clear idea of what you want done. That is usually fairly safe. When you tell them you want something new without being specific enough seems to me to be when you are most at risk.
Good luck!

Loren - again, we are so much alike!!! Imagine that. I've been trimming my bangs for decades and even the sides when it was jagged/angled there. I used to joke with that male stylist at the time, I could cut my hair if I could see the back well. He would just sigh, knowing I was a diehard DIY type. I had him color my gray in the beginning but when his color/wash/cut/blowdry prices almost doubled, I began using Nice & Easy. He agreed that I did a good job, never missing sections. That is probably the type stylist I want to find. One that accepts that ~I~ am the colorist here, not he/she. To save money mostly. Prior to coloring it myself, I was paying close to $80 every 4 weeks and then $6 to park (downtown Cincinnati). I was quickly adding it up on a annual basis and knew it couldn't continue. Long story short, when the so called female stylest hacked my hair up, and I mean a real honest to goodness butcher job, I knew I could do it myself. Her recept. gasped outloud when I paid my bill, that was an early clue I looked awful, next my family's gasps, and then out came MY scissors! There wasn't much left so I couldn't trust her to fix. The very top layer was one inch off my scalp! That layer is now down to my collar - whew, been waiting for that familiar length again.
What I've come to realize is this - it's far better to pay for a hair appt than sit in a stylist's chair with a bad attitude. I wish I had walked out that day. I had taken her last appt., she was in a snit when I sat down and her curt, short answers to any questions I had were dismissed. Her cuts prior to this were very flattering, so I trusted her to give me a nice look. Big-big mistake.
And I even took in a picture! I would whip that picture out and show people - this is what I was supposed to have! I would wash and dry my hair and then rewet areas that were sticking up. What an awful summer that was - LOL. At least my hair does grow fast.
But what she did to me was not right. I really should have sent her a letter and explained that when she's in such a fowl mood, maybe it's best to cancel an appt. or if she's trying to weed out a picky customer, then just be honest. I'm not the stylist for you. Laura says I should still send her a letter, explaining she took away any confidence in her profession. Hey, maybe I will. Who knows. I am particular but my gosh we see these people once every 4 or 6 weeks, they are not with us in the bathroom each morning as you try to style their "vision"!
Janice - my best advice is if they cut too short, that first cut, get the h*ll out of that chair! And bring a hat with you....
Wonder why they always start with the back first......telling you to look down, so you won't be all out shocked at that first short-short cut!
Okay, little hairdresser/stylist/butcher rant over.
Guess I'm a little worried I'll still have this attitude when I finally have the guts to sit in someone's chair. I hope not. It will be a major fake job, of that I'm sure of.
I'd have to see my next door neighbor at her salon, 30 minutes from here. Not her back deck. She cuts her family's hair there and a few close friends but I couldn't ask her to do that.
Well, thanks all.

NO!!!!
But I've got my car back this week and we have a social outing on Friday night.....those two reasons combined should prompt me to make an appt.!
I'm worried about the snooty salon in my area. Reviews on a local rating site are terrible. But the cuts I see in magazines from this one salon are fabulous to say the least. So I'm trying to decide if I want that shop.
Another neighbor I know has been going to a male hairdresser in the area and she has had a cute bob for years. I love how he cuts her hair. She jokes she'll follow him anywhere, anytime. But she's on vacation! Heavens, the decisions, the decisions....
I think I'll wait until Tuesday to talk to her. I should go to the bob-guy. LOL That is what I want - a current, cutting edge bob. Nothing you'd need a curling iron for - I don't even own one anymore!
I'll let you know when I actually sit my arse down in a stylist's chair. At this rate I'm gonna need a Valium! When I've never had one to start with.....just kidding, just kidding.
Thanks for asking.

Hey Mary, I finally got my hair cut by a stylist last week! Me and my mom went in for a pedicure(my first) and just decided to go for it. Got about 10 inches cut off
and she did some long layers in it. I love it, it looks like a "real" haircut instead of what I have been doing to it for years. lol. I am going back next month because I really like her and to get some color put in to hide my greys. Well worth the 40 bucks to have it done. Good luck on getting ahold of your friend to get in with the bob guy. he he. I think you will be soooo glad you finally did it, just take the plunge, I did and I wonder why it took me so long.
Actually I know why, because I was having the same dilemma as you about were to go, and who to let touch my hair. Thankfully we went to this salon where my cousin does pedicures and she has been there a long time and knows all the stylists, and the one that does her hair just happened to be open. Now I am in. lol. Can't wait to go back.

Okay, I guess I need a road trip huh? LOL I might just try your hairdresser if I lived close....he he
You, grey hair? I don't believe it!!!! I guess I think of you as so much younger than me.....anyways, I'm happy for YOU OTown. Truly, I am b/c I know what it's like to try and trust someone again. Your hair must have been very, very long though - to get 10 inches off! Wow, don't know how you able to trim long hair - you have my admiration! Mine is at my collar and it needs a trim, badly, it flips up where I don't want it to.
I sent an email to my neighbor (not the hairdresser one) for the stylist referral. I think she's been hoping I'd consider him. She is near my age too - late 40s and he doesn't make her look frumpy. What I'm most worried about! I don't want to look 20 but I certainly don't want a 51 year old haircut either. Hoping for a 40 year old look - a current one!

Well, I did it - I finally succombed to a professional. Hairstylist, that is - you all be nice! LOL
This new hairstylist (one my youngest daughter tried) only took off what I wanted and we're working towards a real hairstyle (a bob likely) but we're not there yet.
She did say it wasn't very even but hey, I told the truth. I told her I had been trimming it for a while (just didn't say it was over 2 years now!).
It was nice to have someone else cut it for a change. I think I'll like this new girl. She does seem to want to please the client and is up to date on techniques. Whew - what a relief. I could have been scalped again but that would be the third time in 3 years. Maybe in this case, the 3rd Time's a Charm?
