Been There, Done That

#1 Postby Janice » Thu Jul 06, 2006 12:54 pm

I think most of us have gone through hard times. When you were really out of money, what is one meal that was so cheap to make that you made it a lot?
Me.... Romain Noodles (I hope I spelled that right)

We ate them for a lot of meals.

I enjoy frozen dinners, also. :) Used to eat Swanson's but anymore I prefer Stouffer's.

Michael, I've grown up liking fried bologna sandwiches, too. :)

Your hubby is smart. HH should come with a warning label. Then again so should most things in the grocery store that come in boxes.

Sliced with a diagonal cut rather than cut straight up and down into medallions. It's a nicer presentation when stuff is cut like that, but it tastes the same either way.

Mac and tomato soup (poor man's Spaghetti-o's). :)

I think they're called RAMEN noodles.

Hamburger helper is good. Sometimes we add hamburger to it.

(Sorry I stole that from National Lampoon's Vacation) :cheesy:

Mac 'n cheese
Mac 'n cheese with hot dogs
Mac 'n cheese with hamburger
Mac 'n cheese with leftover chile on top
Mac 'n cheese with tuna

I've made mac 'n cheese with powdered milk.

My lunch at work today: A can of store brand chicken 'n rice soup with a can of tuna.

Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.

Spaghetti noodles with oil and garlic. No sauce. This is really tasty and dirt cheap!

My mother told me about being in nursing school and so broke that they would make tomato soup out of packets of ketchup and hot water.

When I was in college and working graveyard shift at a truck stop, I used to buy the 50 cent pieces out of my till when I got one from a customer. When I was really, truly broke, I usually had a stash of at least $10 that I could buy bread and peanut butter with until the next payday. I STILL have a jar with about $30 in half-dollars in it - as long as I have that I will never be broke LOL.

Lots of Mac & Cheese and raman noodles during college. I was lucky - we got a 75% discount on food at the resteraunt attached to the truck stop where I worked during our shift - I would order the stir fry, pay about $1.25 for it, and make it last three days.

Tomato soup and cheese melted. Cheese melted is a grilled cheese sandwich. My kids called it that when they were little and the name stuck.

Fried egg sandwiches.

Hamburger helper. Good thing my family likes it.

Beenie Weenies. Hotdogs in pork and beans.
