Social Security

#1 Postby Janice » Sun Jul 09, 2006 10:11 am

Social security to some people is the only form of any retirement income they will receive. If the social security funds cease to exist, what will these people do? Some people don't even save a dime. Will this cause the US to become a welfare state again taking care of all the people that will never receive ss and didn't save or will there be a new system put in place? Remember, there are so many of SSI too and not able to work.

Please let us keep politics out of this.

IMHO, the government will have to step in and take care of those that will not have anything if SS dries up. There's an awful lot of people out there that live paycheck to paycheck and just can't save anything for retirement. Even if they could, it may not be enough.

Unfortunately, I've thought about that more, now, as I'm older. Of course,
no one even dreamed of the idea that Social Security might not be there,
when I was younger. I do have a little investment going, now, hoping that it
will be a supplement to a still-existing monthly SS check!

IF you could try and save ANYTHING, it would be better than nothing, but I know it is difficult for many. IMHO, the money we've already put out in our paychecks over the years SHOULD BE THERE for us when we retire/no longer can work. There will be alot of people working way past retirement age.

I'm hoping that my 401k/IRA's will supplement an existing SS check too breeze!

I'll probably be working past retirement age too. I can't see myself retiring to a rocking chair anyway.

Alicia ive got both by choice. The last time I saw my paycheck deductions are being taken for SS. I have no choice there, and now it appears than when I retire in 22 years there may not be SS. And that stinks.
