Song blamed for shootings

Police say DJ shattered gang truce at club, ending with 2 deaths

DALLAS, Texas - Two gangs declared a truce to celebrate a birthday. But police say one song shattered the peace.

For about an hour Sunday night, the leaders of two gangs – which remain unnamed by Dallas police officials – put rivalries aside, allowing a party at El Angel in the 600 block of North Harwood Street downtown to continue trouble-free.

That is, according to police, until the DJ began booming "Put Yo Hood Up," a raunchy call-to-action gangsta anthem that police said practically sparked a riot inside the club.

The result was two young men – Lendl Carey, 22, and Kenneth Haggerty, 20 – shot dead in the streets outside the club. Injured were Dewayne Braxton, 24; Christopher Finley, 20; Jabari Andrews, 19; and Cornelius Finley, 19. They were treated and released from the hospital.

Police on Monday continued the search for the shooters and were reviewing parking lot surveillance tapes for clues to who was present and who was shooting.

But authorities laid the blame for how the fight began squarely on the rap song's lyrics.

"Witnesses said this was the flashpoint," said Deputy Chief Alfredo Saldana, who heads the crimes against persons division.

Dead girl's brother placed in foster care

DALLAS, Texas (The Dallas Morning News) - The brother of Liseth Castro, the 4-year-old girl who died from suspicious injuries in South Dallas Monday morning, has been placed in foster care, Child Protective Services officials said Tuesday.

Nathan Nunez, 2, was placed with a foster family Monday night after Dallas police told Child Protective Services that his sister’s death was suspicious, CPS spokesperson Marissa Gonzales said.

Police responded to a 911 call around 6 a.m. Monday in the 1100 block of South Beckley and found the young girl unconscious. She was transported to Methodist Charlton Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Autopsy results are expected Tuesday afternoon.

Shooting victim 'not the intended target'

DALLAS, Texas (The Dallas Morning News) - A man was shot and killed Monday night in Southeast Dallas in an apparent revenge shooting, Dallas police said.

Eric Simpson, 20, was standing in the front yard of a house with a group of people around 10:00 p.m. in the 2500 block of Keeler Street when a man in a brown or gray Cadillac shot Mr. Simpson multiple times. He was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he died.

The man driving the Cadillac was described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall and about 200 pounds, and was wearing blue jean shorts and a navy blue T-shirt.

Family inspired to donate bone marrow

So much about Medical City Dallas Hospital—and this day—has Andrew Scott's heart racing. He and his wife Jenny both sense it.

Allie, their beloved angel, was just four months old when she was brought to the same facility in 2004 and diagnosed with leukemia. Her mother gave thanks to the many strangers who donated blood.

"Those people—they saved my daughter," a tearful Jenny Scott said at the time.

No one hurt in Six Flags fire

ARLINGTON, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) — Guests at Six Flags over Texas had a scare Tuesday night after a fire broke out at the theme park's Majestic Theater.

The two-alarm blaze was confined to an outside stairwell at the theater and was tapped out shortly after 9 p.m.

Some rides in the Goodtimes Square section of the park were temporarily shut down as a precaution.

Battle rages over 'historic' home

DALLAS, Texas - What is the difference between an historic landmark and a decrepit old house? A lawyer.

That's a neighborhood joke making the rounds in one of Dallas' historic districts near Swiss Avenue. The humor rises from a long standing legal battle over an old home, between its owners, who want to tear it down, and preservationists who want to save it.

When Sharon Wyly and her husband first saw the vintage home she wanted to rehabilitate it. Early on, she says she found out just how impossible that would be.

Dallas police seize $13 million of cocaine

DALLAS, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) - Police have confiscated more than 600 pounds of cocaine with a street value of more than $13 million, which the department says is the largest ever drugs seizure in its history.

Dallas officers made the discovery after stopping two vehicles on Tuesday.

The drugs were hidden in the floor board of one of the vehicles and the bed of a truck.

Truck crushes car against barrier in Ellis County

ELLIS COUNTY, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) - A car smashed between a truck and the barrier on the I-35 at the Ovilla Road exit is causing extensive traffic delays in the area.

The three-vehicle accident, which happened on Wednesday afternoon, has caused the closure of all the northbound lanes.

Arlington playground burned; arson suspected

ARLINGTON, Texas (WFAA ABC 8) — Investigators are trying to figure out how a children's playground burned to the ground.

The playground at F.J. "Red" Kane Park in southwest Arlington was destroyed by the fire and arson is suspected.

3 Dallas ISD employees put on leave

DALLAS, Texas - Dallas schools Superintendent Michael Hinojosa on Wednesday began promised reprimands for employees suspected of misusing the district’s credit card program, sending two upper-level managers and a secretary home.

The three employees placed on paid administrative leave were Sherri Brokaw, overseer of the credit card program; George Sparks, facilities support division manager; and Gloria Orapello, a secretary who once worked for Mr. Sparks and who records showed had spent thousands at the exchange at Carswell Air Force Base.

Fort Worth carjacking ends in crash, gunfire

FORT WORTH, Texas — Police said a carjacking on the north side of Fort Worth Wednesday night touched off a series of events, including an accident and a police-involved shooting.

Four people—including the suspect—were injured in the mayhem around 8 p.m. in the 1900 block of Sylvania Ave.

Witnesses told police it all started when a Mercedes sport utility vehicle driven by a 17-year-old juvenile came flying through the neighborhood at a high rate of speed.

Fire is latest setback for food bank

About 35 firefighters needed an hour to contain a Thursday morning fire at the beleaguered Metroplex Food Bank in Fort Worth, which also was heavily damaged in a blaze a year ago.

Fort Worth Fire Lt. Kent Worley said the call came in about 5 a.m. after a smoke alarm was tripped at a uniform company next door to the food bank in the 3200 block of Yuma Avenue.

“Once we got there we could see the smoke was coming from the building next door,” he said.

Teen dead after suspected crime spree

Within a few minutes, a 17-year-old carjacked an acquaintance, forced another vehicle into a house and was fatally shot by a Fort Worth officer Wednesday night, police said.

Police said the spree started about 7:50 p.m. when the teen, whose name was not released, was arguing with two females in the 2500 block of Carnation Street, near State Highway 183 and Interstate 35W.

"The suspect fired at least one shot in the direction of the females and stole one of the females' SUV," Fort Worth police Lt. Dean Sullivan said.

Two Grapevine women stabbed inside their home

GRAPEVINE, Texas - Police are investigating the stabbing of two women which took place at their home near Silver Lake Park on Thursday morning.

Connie Britt, 62, who lives at the 1800 block of Chris Craft, heard banging on her back door at around 7 a.m., police say.

She apparently answered the door to a man who barged in and started stabbing her. She received several wounds, including one to her throat. She was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where she is currently listed in fair condition.

Police seek ID of sleeping girl

ARLINGTON — Arlington police Thursday released a photo of a child who may have been the victim of an assault.

Investigators want the public's help as they try to identify and locate the girl.

In any case of possible sexual assault, great care is always taken to protect the identity of a victim. But police said they are deviating from that policy because of the unusual nature of this case.

Police say the girl—a Hispanic or black female about 10 years old—was apparently sleeping when the photo was snapped. She was wearing a shiny pink, white and silver nightgown and was covered with a yellow-and-white blanket.
