I am getting my teeth fixed and I am nervous

#1 Postby beachbum_al » Tue Jul 25, 2006 8:42 am

I have serious phobias about going to the dentist. To the point that I didn't go for ten years until this past year and that is only because a co-worker at the school I worked at forced me to go.

Well today I am going to have my teeth worked on at 1pm and I am nervous. They are going to rebuild the front teeth and filled the cavities that have grown in the last ten years.

If you are wondering why I have such a phobia over going to the dentist it all started when I was in high school. I had to have major jaw surgery on both jaws to correct a jaw problem. One jaw would not grow so they had to add extra bone from one jaw to the other. I was in the hospital for almost two weeks and had my mouth wired shut for three months. Ever since I have feared the dentist.

I have made great strives in this year by just going and having my teeth cleaned. It didn't hurt near as bad as I thought it would. Now I am going in to have the front teeth re-bonded and fixed. I will update later tonight and maybe show you a picture. All I can say is that they are bad right now! Embarrassing!

Oh you poor thing! I used to be afraid of the dentist too, my former Pediatric dentist was very impatient and bribed his patients with toys at the end of the visit (I should add rough visits). My mom switched us to another dentist and he was much nicer. Our current dentist is very kind and numbs the gum before giving you a novacaine shot. He's very careful not to continue if you feel pain. I would have gently point out a lot has changed in dentistry in 10 years. Now they can build crowns in the office. They can give you new fillings that white and made of composite material. So please take a deep breath and at least see what they suggest. Also, I told our current dentist I don't really like dental appts., my past experience, etc. so he keyed into that. He explains everything he's doing and very kind about it. I would suggest you just be flat out honest. I wish you the very best here.

And finally, my main complaint now with dentists? Their outrageous bills! Yikes.

Let us know how it goes.
