Argh! This gets my goat!

Last week, one of our Peds/Med residents was arrested and charged with aggravated assault for allegedly shooting a guy on a bike.

Everyone was shocked because the doc is a very caring physician and father. Sometimes, he would call back after someone paged him and you could hear his kids laughing in the background as he relayed to us that he was at home spending time with his kids and no longer on call. Rumor around the hospital is that the victim had attempted to rob the doc's wife and son and the doctor went after him (with this being Texas and all...what would you expect? ). Seriously, I wouldn't consider it the smartest way to get justice, but I'm not a parent and I know some parents will do anything to protect their kids.

Nevertheless, we don't know all the facts yet and the news has yet to update the story.

So, in trying to follow up on the latest news in the story, I did a search on Yahoo for the doctor. I was amazed to find the original article linked or posted in blogs, message boards, and CrimeLibrary.com! And what really bugged me was that some people were assuming, based on the doctor's name, that this was a terrorist act. He has an Arabic name so they assumed he was Muslim, even though the articles (and witnesses) don't mention anything about the doctor's faith, the victim's faith, or about any comments made by either party. This happened while the attack in Seattle was also big in the news. It even made it on the front page of Michael Savage's website - http://www.homestead.com/prosites-prs/ (three-fourths of the way down on the right under "Important Recent Stories").

I'm as ticked off as the next person about all the stuff going on in the world. But honestly, can't some people get it through their thick skulls that sometimes an attack is not Muslim v. non-Muslim or Arab v. Israeli? Sometimes, it's simply (and sadly) American citizen v. American citizen.

I've met Dr. Fadhli and he worked on my floor for a month during one of his residency rotations. He was born in Indiana, for crying out loud. I find it hard to believe that this was any type of anti-American or anti-Semitic kind of act.

On top of that, the husband of the dean of the college of medicine was attacked by three men when he left home to walk their dog. http://news.galvestondailynews.com/stor ... 42fe410b33 Apparently, it's all tied in to a slew of job cuts here because they told him "Your wife doesn't know who she's (expletive) with."

Did you ever have the feeling there was a full moon and it was only hovering all over your little hometown?

It reminds me of the bumper sticker that reads, "The more people I meet, the more I like my dog."

Racist and stupid tend to go hand in hand, and your story is a case in point.

It's lucky for us that these people are usually lazy. It gets really scary when they're racist, stupid, and motivated.
