For The Older Folks Here

#1 Postby Janice » Mon Aug 21, 2006 9:20 am

Name these three shows:

1. Decoder ring
2. Only the Shadow Knows
3. The peanut gallery

Can you remember old sayings, etc. that refer to old shows on tv? Or something novel in a show that is remembered with that show, like the chocolates and Lucy and Ethel working on the assembly line in the factory.
Just a couple words to describe.

I think the Decoder Ring is/was Little Orphan Annie... and the ONLY reason I know that is because it was in the movie "A Christmas Story", You know, the one with "You'll shoot your eye out!"... And My mom used to say "Only the Shadow Knows" in this spooky voice... but I thought that was the name of the program, "The Shadow"... she also talked a lot about "Light's Out" which sounds like that would've been a lot of fun. Seriously, before my time; but I do remember hearing them talk a lot about their favorite radio shows. The Peanut Gallery is an expression I've used more times than I could imagine... have NO clue where it originated.....or maybe I do---was that Howdy Doody?? Just a wild guess.

I think Flash Gordon or another old space tv show had a decoder ring you could order too.

Yes, the Peanut Gallery was on the Howdy Doody show with Clarabell.

I know that phrase! The show was set in a diner and Mel was the grumpy but loveable cook. I believe Flo was one of the waitresses and one had a young son to raise. Senior Moment here but the name of the show escapes me! Sigh.....this thread is directed at "older folks" - yup, that would include me.....lol.
