Do you recognize this quotation?

#1 Postby Persepone » Mon Sep 04, 2006 9:40 am

Does anyone recognize the following quotation/paraphrase?

I need to know whether it is a quotation or a paraphrase and where it came from.

Star Wars is a possible source.

This is quite important and I need to know by Wednesday or Thursday...

Many thanks.

The night is cold, the shadow is all around everywhere
no rays of sunlight, no light anywhere
hope is lost and can never be found

there is a way to have hope
keep hope

I've tried Yahoo, Google, Internet Movie Database, and Drew's Script-o-rama.

No luck yet....

I don't think it's Star Wars but I'll PM young yoda, to be certain.

Have you tried Internet Movie Database? Not sure if you can enter a phrase but each movie and/or TV show, has a trivia link, with quotes and such from each. They also have message boards so you could just join and post a question there.

PS - oops I see Duckie mentioned Movie Database already.

Well, if it's a paraphrase, it will probably not appear in a search engine. You would need the original quote.

They give "Scarface" as an answer, but perusing the script, I don't find that quote in it anywhere.

I even tried to look for keywords ("hope, sunlight, cold, shadow"), not the whole quote, just in case it is paraphrased, but still didn't find it.

I think scarface as a sarcastic response.

Try posting it on a Home Theater or Movie forum.

Well if it isn't on google, it's almost certainly a paraphrase.

Could there be a trick to it? Because it doesn't make much sense. Hope is lost and can never be found? The very next line says there's a way to have hope.

Why not give us some information on why you need it and such, it could be important to figuring it out.

Star Wars IV, the original Star Wars film, is also called "A New Hope" but I don't know if that specific quote is in the screenplay anywhere. I don't remember it.

Try The Internet Movie Database.

I basically live on there and it can be very helpful.

If it were from Star Wars, it would be from Episode III at the end-though most likely in the book as that is definitely not in the movie.

Well, that's the new title - A New Hope. I'll always refer to Episode IV as simply, Star Wars. As it was titled when it premiered. I should have thought of that though. So many people refer to it with the title, one George Lucas came up with, correct? If a SW character said these lines, it would have to be either from Obi Wan or yoda. It sure sounds like something Obi Wan would say but again, as Steve pointed out, it may have come from the book - a book not written by George Lucas, so this SW fan won't even read it (or any of them). For the record, I prefer the original, theater versions too, as they premiered (but that's a whole 'nother subject!).

The Title A New Hope was always at the start of the crawler at the beginning of Episode IV.

Steve - true, it's there in the scroll but it will always be SW to my family, anyway.

Persepone - the IMDB site has daily movie quotes. I clicked on the main movie title page for all quotes. If you click on the letter S, many Star Wars links come up. It would take a while but perhaps this phrase is from one of them. Or even Star Trek, many links for that show/movie.

There are lost of biblical inferences here, and one of MLK's sermons is quite similar. are you sure it's a movie quote?
