sciatic nerve??
My back has been Bothering me for about a week now, but today is the worst. I stood up out of bed this morning and instantly fell straight back right on to the bed. The pain starts in my lower right back and then shoots down throug my right buttocks down to about my knee or calf area. Is that Sciatic nerve? That is what my GF is telling me it is. If so what can I do? The pain is just really bad today

Take care
BTDT, hopefully you can get some anti-inflammatories like Karan said, but the Advil/Ibuprofen should help too. The doc should be able to give you some exercises that will help too.
I originally had some success with a Chiropractor, but after one session left me almost unable to walk for a few days, I have never gone back. I will not say they aren't beneficial, but I would go to a "regular" doc first.

my wife had surgery for the exact pain you describe. She had a bulging disc. They did some shots in the nerve first which didn't work to well. I believe they fused some vertebrae when they operated.
Good luck Chad -- resist surgery if you can. From all I've heard and experienced (2nd hand that is), surgery seldom cures back ailmants. Just stop in at any "Specialist" office and see the people sitting on the floor waiting hours to see the doctor.
The pain would go all the way down her leg just as you describe with considerable numbness in the toes.
Not all doom and gloom Chad..my wife is actually better since she has gotten herself into a regular exercise regime, but if she stops, things get worse. She has been dignosed with Fibromyalgia since her surgery, which doctors like to "treat" with mucho pain meds. She has "fired" this doctor and only takes one of the meds he had prescribed for her. I think its called Arthrotec.
If all else fails buddy, I hear marijuana is a superb pain medicine.

The dreaded Flexaril. lol. Nighty night Chad.![]()
I was going to say "kidney stone"
Na, I've had both...Kidney Stone pain is 10 times worse and in just the lower back....
If they tell you to try the pain blocking shots...Decline they only work for a day or to and your back to square 1....I see a MRI in your future...That will tell all...

An Idea....
Hey Chad, I noticed you mentioned your pair upon rising from bed. (no this is NOT an inappropriate remedy
) If you sleep on your side...put a pillow between your knees, it changes the angle of your hip joints to your spine, and takes the pressure off the sciatic nerve. I went through this while I was pregnant, and a midwife suggested the pillow thing to me. After too many broken ribs and dislocated hips later... I sleep this way every night!!!! Good Luck... and no pain.

Chad make yourself a "cocktail" of an anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen(Motrin or Advil) or Naproxen Sodium (Aleve), then a muscle relaxer such as Skelaxin, Flexoril or Zanaflex and a Pain killer such as Percocet, Lortab or even a Fioricet. Repeat every 8 hours until the inflammation subsides.

oh Yes, Sciatica.......
Join the club.
For now just take OTC anti-inflammatory meds.... Advil/Aleve. When you go to the doc ask about Flexeril and say goodnight. They might talk you into an X-ray... say nope, want an MRI... X-ray shows nothing. Believe me... been there... done that. If it is Sciaitca or a bulging disk... it will show up more on the MRI.

I have degenerative disc diesase, 2 ruptured discs, sciatic nerve on my left side, I take 30 mg. of Lortab a day, 100 mg. of script Ibuprophen and when needed a 350 mg. Soma....it's a PAIN in the asp and leg for sure.
As J said, a excercise routine works GREAT, I *try* to walk at least 2 miles a day, it seems to help some but most of the time I'm on the pain meds!
