#1 Postby Lindaloo » Tue Sep 19, 2006 4:56 pm

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Allegations that racing dogs at Mobile
Greyhound Park are being drugged to influence the outcome of racesare being investigated by the Mobile County district attorney's office.
Carey Theil, spokesman for Grey-Two-K U-S-A, a national
greyhound protection group, told the Press-Register in a story
today that he had gotten a tip yesterday from a Mobile County
source that drug testing was being carried out at the park.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson confirmed thata probe is underway.
Thiel said the allegations are against dog trainers at the parkand not against the park's owners, managers or members of theMobile County Racing Commission.
Commission Chairman Eddie Menton said some of the allegations
are quote "farfetched", but said they are cooperating.
Thiel said some trainers at the park have been suspended or hadtheir licenses temporarily suspended.

I wish he would have elaborated on what "farfetched" means. Grey2K used to be extreme like PETA, but have turned their reputation around recently. I support doing away with racing dogs for money. It is just not right.

About 2 years ago or so they were having a problem with the dogs racing at our dog track here. They were giving the dogs cocaine before the races so they would run faster. :grr: Maybe that is one of the allegations that he thinks is so far fetched. I was really surprised when I heard the results of the blood tests on our dogs here. Who would think that someone would give dogs cocaine? Unreal.

I agree O. It is getting more and more frequent.

Well, they updated the story and all of it was true. Funny it is not so "farfetched" now is it?

If only the greyhounds themselves could talk. They might tell us all we want to know about possible race fixing at Mobile Greyhound Park! Racing Commissioner Eddie Menton tells News 5's Tiffany Craig that this is a nightmare. "It's the worst thing that can happen in racing! It's the type of thing that can put the track out of business." Menton says track workers clued them in on what's going on. "We're on this! We're working hard on it! We're trying to make it safe for people to come out and bet and know that when they come out here they're getting a fair shake."

Right now, there's a shakeup at the track. The accusations are that some dog handlers could have drugged dogs to win the races. Then, big bucks were bet on the guaranteed winners! Menton won't comment on exactly how but he says it's something he's never seen before. "I've researched and researched and tried to find out where this scheme was used somewhere else and I can't find it anywhere right now."

He told the Mobile County District Attorney's office about the case. Nicki Patterson released little information about what they've found so far. "I anticipate at this time that there will be several charges coming out of this investigation. We're doing everything we can to ensure that there is some honesty in the racing industry that's located in Mobile County."

News 5 has learned four handlers have been suspended and lost their licenses!

In many cases, caffeine is the substance used to enhance a dog's performance. Track officials say they do random drug tests on the dogs, but it was irregularities in betting that got their attention!!

So, the race is on to bring the investigation to an end. Everyone wants things back on track at Mobile Greyhound Park.

Nothing like a couple puns to finish the story.

I guess that when there's money to be made, people can act like dogs.
