A-Rod's private jet overruns runway; Rodriguez unharmed

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was a passenger in a private plane that overran a runway Friday in Burbank, Calif., just two days after pitcher Cory Lidle was killed in a plane accident in Manhattan.

None of the seven people on board – five passengers and two crew members – were hurt in Friday's incident, which took place at 11:35 a.m. Pacific time at Bob Hope Airport, according to airport spokesman Victor Gil.

Gil said the Gulfstream G-II twin engine jet overran the runway after landing and was stopped by a specially designed system, the Engineered Materials Arresting System, pavement injected with air bubbles designed to collapse under the weight of an aircraft. The same system is in use at LaGuardia Airport.

The system was installed at Bob Hope Airport after a 2000 accident in which a Southwest Airlines jet skidded through a concrete barrier and ended up on a city street. Forty-four people were injured in that crash.

Yankees spokesman Rick Cerrone said team executives, including general manager Brian Cashman, were informed about the incident by Rodriguez's representatives.

"I just spoke to Brian Cashman," Cerrone said. "From what he understood, everyone on board is fine and we're very thankful for that."

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, Gil said.
