Mayor Bloomberg is saying that it appears to be a strong smell of Mercaptan (additive to natural gas so humans can detect it), but the city's air monitors and sensors indicate there are NO ELEVATED LEVELS OF NATURAL GAS IN MANHATTAN. That being said, however, the mayor has indicated that the source of the odor has not been pinpointed. My mom, who works in Times Square, told me about a half hour ago that her building's management says that the odor is sewage-related, though that seems contrary to the mayor's remarks.
Overall, it is important to note that although there is a strong odor of 'natural gas' permeating much of Manhattan, there is apparently no threat to human safety and terrorism has been ruled out.

Yep, they shut down downtown Mobile from a ruptured gas line this morning. Weird!!

DOWNTOWN MOBILE-Mobile Fire and Rescue tells Fox 10 News a gas line leak at the RSA tower is almost stopped. There have been no reports of injuries, but some streets are still blocked.
The call came in shortly after 10:30am. Fox 10 News has a crew on the scene. We'll update you when the streets are reopened.

SUGAR LAND, Texas -- A leaking tanker-truck sent a large plume of white smoke into the air Monday afternoon, forcing officials to issue a shelter-in-place, KPRC Local 2 reported.
The chemical release came from a ruptured line at the Nalco Energy Services plant at 7705 Highway 90 near Highway 59 in Sugar Land shortly before 2 p.m.
Officials said the tanker is leaking ethylenediamine.

As a precaution, Highway 90 and several neighboring streets were shut down in both directions.
"Highway 90 is completely shut down. Highway 6 has been shut down in portions between 90 and Highway 59," Sugar Land police chief Steve Griffith said.
Several subdivisions were also asked to shelter-in-place, including Venetian Estates, Brookside Belknap, The Hill and Mayfield Park.
Fort Bend Independent School District officials said the following schools are in lockdown and will shelter-in-place until the all-clear is given.

* Sugar Land Middle School
* Sugar Mill Elementary School
* Lakeview Elementary School
M.R. Wood Alternative Campus
Parents have been asked to not pick up their children and wait for the buses to take students home.
When a shelter-in-place is issued, residents should:

* Go inside.
* Shut all doors and windows.
* Turn off air conditioners and heaters to prevent outside air from getting inside.
* Stay off the phone.
* Do not use fireplaces. Put out fires and close all dampers.
* Move to the room with the fewest windows and doors. Tape around doors, windows, exhaust fans and vents using plastic sheeting or garbage bags, if directed.
Turn on the radio or television to listen for further instructions.
