And grade it based on this rubric:
6: This essay shows both original insight and also skillfully weaves in the insights of others. The structure of the essay reflects the most important insights of the essay. The writer chooses evidence that clearly supports the argument. In addition, this essay is clear, concise, and elegant in the use of language. 6 essays will also deomnstrate accurate use of in-text citations along with a properly formatted bibliography.
5: A 5 essay will present a clear, coherent argument, but the insights will not be as profound as in a 6 essay. The writing will be clear and reasonable but without the elegance of the 6 essay. Readers will find significant insights in this essay, but the ideas will not always connect so clearly. The essay will clearly demonstrate insights of the author, but also of other writers, properly documented with in-text citations. The bibliography will be properly formatted.
4: A 4 essay completes all of the requierments of the assignment adequately. The essay may present more information than insight, but there is a clear thesis that is defended adequtaely with explanation and evidence. Perhaps few of the insights will be original to the author, but those insights will present a coherent argument. The "flow" from one idea to the next may not be as clear as in a 5 or 6 essay, but readers will be able to find the loic of the argument. This essay will include in-text citations and a bibliography.
3: This essay will demonstrate the writer's knowledge of hte subject, but there will be few insights into the topic. This essay is reasonably clear and accurate, but shows more literal and less interpretive thinking than in essays with a higher score. Or this essay may demonstrate useful insights but not be presented clearly or logically enough ot earn a higher score. IN other words, this essay demonstrates adequate but limited writing skills.
2: A 2 essay has significant and obvious weaknesses. There may be noticeable problems in teh structure of the essay. It may be difficult ot define exactly the point of the writer's insights. Or, the writer may include significant errors in fact. A 2 essay may fail to give credit ot the original author clearly - not plagiarism but a lack of attribution. Other features in teh essay may be well done, btu one or more weaknesses will require rewriting in order ot demonstrate those skills.
1: A 1 essay is simply unacceptable. See me.
