NEW YORK - Three men were arrested and one was being sought in connection to a plan to set off explosives in a fuel line that feeds John F. Kennedy International Airport and runs through residential neighborhoods, according to an indictment released Saturday.

U.S. Attorney Roslynn R. Mauskopf called it “one of the most chilling plots imaginable.”

“The devastation that would be caused had this plot succeeded is just unthinkable,” she said at a news conference.

Authorities arrested Russell Defreitas, a U.S. citizen native to Guyana and former JFK employee. He was in custody in Brooklyn and was expected to be arraigned Saturday afternoon.

Two other men, Abdul Kadir of Guyana and Kareem Ibrahim of Trinidad, are in custody in Trinidad. A fourth man, Abdel Nur, of Guyana, was still being sought.

All four men have been charged with conspiring to attack the airport, one of the nation’s busiest, by blowing up major fuel supply tanks and the pipeline, according to the indictment. The plot involved a pipeline that takes fuel from a facility in Linden, N.J., to the airport, according to WNBC-TV NewsChannel4’s Jonathan Dienst, who first reported the story.

Kadir, a former member of Parliament in Guyana, was arrested in Trinidad for attempting to secure money for “terrorist operations,” according to a Guyanese police commander who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Kadir, a Muslim, left his position in Parliament last year. Muslims make up about 9 percent of the former Dutch and British colony’s 770,000 population, mostly from the Sunni sect.

The plot never got past the planning stages. It posed no threat to air safety or the public, the FBI said Saturday.

Well, on first reading this seems like a more credible plot than some of the others (like, for example the Miami seven who seem more like they were a bunch of homeless guys trying to scam the FBI informant for stuff, or that weird mass cell-phone buying thing which never did make much sense to me.)

I'm not clear on how much damage blowing up the fuel line could have done - it's my impression there are safeguards for cutting off flow in case of a breach - but certainly it would have done some substantial damage (not to mention causing a major interruption of air service.)

These kind of infrastructure attacks are one kind of attack that I've sort of expected to come along at some point. The other one, of course, is suicide bombers in crowded public spaces.

Makes me feel comfortable working at an airport. I guess security will be getting tighter now???

This is just another reason why we should close our borders and not let ANYONE in. We (USA) have been too nice and we are now paying for it.

What?!

--First of all, there are several could be terrorists who reside in the US, who are already citizens. Doing that will not stop those. Might as well deport all immigrants then? Probably not.

--Second of all, this country's foundation is based on a) tolerance and b) the laborious work of immigrants. USA would not be USA without the mixture of races, religions, and customs that this country contains. Stopping immigration sorta undermines the concepts and ideals of which this country was formed out of.

--Third of all, 99.999% of immigrants are good people looking for new opportunities. I would not see how they would threaten the integrity or safety of the American nation and peoples. Is it worth it to stop 1 bad person, only to stop tens of thousands of other good persons, who could've contributed to American society in a beneficial way?

The closed-borders thing is mostly a knee-jerk reaction. Nothing even close to that will ever happen.

The USA does not grow by itself at a sufficient rate to support a capitalist economy. Therefore, we need immigrants.

So, it's either immigrants or a new economic system. Anyone for communism?

If we closed our borders, I wouldn't be here.

Well I'm sorry for making people mad. I didn't mean to offend anyone by my statements. I just get sick and tired of hearing about stuff like this. I guess we just live in a different world now and nothing is going to change, for the better anyhow. We are still going to be plagued by people wanting to kill us no matter what we do.

This is a little off topic but another thing that makes me very mad is how we are losing jobs to foreign countries. Hersey is been rumored to be moving to Mexico. Hersey isn't too far from me and just upsets me that we are losing things like that.

So again I do appologize to everyone.

You didn't make me Mad Luke. :D I understand your view and why you feel that way but thats not the answer imo. America stands for freedom and if we close our borders then the terrorists win. That was my point.

Amen.

Now securing the borders more effectively, that's another thing.

None taken. I was more surprised than angry. I too am sick and tired of hearing about terrorist plots.
