Poe Elementary School Bombing

#1 Postby Ptarmigan » Mon Jul 30, 2007 8:45 pm

On a late summer Tuesday, September 15, 1959, Paul Orgeron, 49, a tile setter from South Houston lived in a boarding house with his son Dusty. He had a criminal record and divorced from his wife because he abused her. He wanted to enroll his son at Edgar Allen Poe Elementary School in Houston, Texas. However, he was denied that on grounds that he did not have the proper papers, including a birth certificate and said he would come back.
He comes back to Poe Elementary School with his son and a suitcase with papers. One of the note says:

Please do not get excite over this order I'm giving you. In this suitcase you see in my hand is fill to the top with high explosive. I mean high, high. Please believe me when I say I have 2 more (illegible) that are set to go off at two times. I do not believe I can kill and not kill what is around me, an I mean my son will go. Do as I say an no one will get hurt. Please. (signed) P. H. Orgeron.

Orgeron tells all the children to form a circle around him and a teacher becomes suspicious. The teacher tells Orgeron to leave the school ground and the children start heading towards the teacher. Then Orgeron pushes a button and the suitcase explodes. The suitcase with sticks of dynamite.
Five people die in the attack, his son Rusty, two students, a custodian, and teacher. At first, police thought the bomber fled, except Orgeron died in the explosion and his body could not be found because the bomb exploded right by him. 19 people were wounded in the tragedy. It could of been much worse if it happened at the playground and PE, where 125 children were there at the time of the bombing.
Some of the victims were found burned and naked. The five victims of this attack are:
Dusty Paul
Jennie Kolter
James Montgomery
Billy Hawes Jr.
John Fitch Jr.

Two Houston elementary schools are named after the two victims, Jennie Kolter and James Montomery. The Poe Elementary School Bombing is one of Houston's deadliest mass murder.
