Rabid Raccoon

#1 Postby Stephanie » Sun Aug 26, 2007 6:55 pm

I saw a very sick, (aka rabid) raccoon on my front lawn yesterday afternoon. I came home from food shopping and I don't know how I didn't see him when I first went inside, but when I went to go back out I saw him. He was stumbling and shaky. I called Animal Control and they asked me just to keep an eye on where he was headed, since he was still slowly making his way off of my lawn, to my driveway and then to the neighbor's. By the time they arrived, he was under another neighbor's shed. It was so heartbreaking. It kind of whined and barked at me a few times when I was saying to it lay down, etc. I stayed about 20 ft. away. Unfortunately, they couldn't retrieve him from under there. I left a note on my neighbor's door letting them know. They were on vacation this past week. We're assuming that he would just leave from under there and head into the woods behind our development. We have wetlands back there, so there's no other homes behind us.

It was sunch an awful site to see and I felt so bad for the poor thing! :(

Poor raccoon. You hate to see any kind of animal suffer. I'm surprised animal control didn't set out a trap for it.

yeah and keep your pets inside or at least keep a close eye on them for a while anyways until you are sure the raccoon is out of the neighborhood.

Yeah, I didn't think of that.

A friend at work asked if I had a gun. I thought about that later in the day on Saturday after everything settled down a bit. I don't know if that would've been legal for me to shoot it, but since I don't have one, it's a moot point.

I just wish that they got there faster than they did.

So you haven't seen it again? Have the neighbors?
Wonder if he went and died somewhere? :( Hope it was a lone case, usually if there is one there are a few cases. Poor coon. Keep your eyes open for the next few weeks.

I haven't heard anything from the neighbors about him again. I do hope that he is in a better place by now.

It does make me nervous to think that there are probably other rabid animals nearby. He had to have gotten it from something else.
