Social Security is a PONZI scheme (aka "pyramid"). It only works if the population continues to grow at a fast rate. The first people in did very well. IIRC, 1997 was the break even year. On average, people retiring before then got more out of Social Security than they put in, the later people retire, the greater the negative NPV (FICA taxes in vs retirement benefits paid out). Maybe one reason why leaders in both parties seem to favor open borders, as immigrants can grow the population enough to delay the eventual collapse.
