Cyclone1's "Sweeney Todd" Movie Review

#1 Postby Cyclone1 » Sat Dec 29, 2007 12:28 am

I walked into the theater to see Sweeney Todd with high hopes. When I saw the trailer, I thought this was going to be the first movie I've ever given 5 stars. And then... the movie started. It was okay at the beginning, Sweeney Todd's back story was interesting, and his character was very complex. I was interested. Then they sing. A lot. Then he meets a woman who's willing to help him, and tries to get revenge on some guy who stole his wife a looooong time ago, and since he's a barber, tries to kill him with a razor. Eventually, he decides that no one deserves to live, so he kills a lot people by slitting their throat with the razor. This happens throughout the film. They sing, kill people, and the weird goth woman he meets grinds up the bodies and stuffs them into meat pies and sells them. And then he's killed. And then it ends... I walked out of the theater... just shocked at how bad this movie was. It was a basically just a film full of gore and blood. And singing. The trailer made it look like a deep, scary, action-packed epic that looked amazing, and then this is the movie they give us. Needless to say, I was HUGELY dissappointed. Johnny Depp was a great actor (and singer) as were all the other actors, but the story line was so dry and boring. I thought it would be my first five star rating, but I give Sweeney Todd a 2 stars out of 5.

I would suggest you not waste your time and money on this movie, but then again, everyone's different. If you want a movie full of action, murder, mystery, and exitement... stay home and re-watch Pulp Fiction. If you want a dark musical that has a bizzare plotline that's neither exiting or intriguing, go see Sweeney Todd in theathers now.

No problem, it is my duty.

Keep in mind, though, that's just one guy's opinion. It's a movie strictly for die-hard fans of the broadway show, not really the causual movie-go-er. I didn't like it, nor did anyone I went with.

I'm no professional, but I don't need to be. go to movietickets.com and read the "critics review". It gives it a solid 4 stars. But go over to the user review, and it's pretty difficult to find anything above a three. Infact, three's are kind of rare.

Critics differ from actual people, because they look at stuff like... the artwork portrayed by the actors deep inner ...portrayal of ... the digital systematic... system of... film or whatever, whereas actual people look at stuff like, I don't know, plot and whether or not it makes sense. I'll say again, I'm not a critic.

Lol, well, like I said, opinions differ. I love weird movies too, but this just didn't cut it.

0_0 That's bizarre... It was one of the best movies of the year (for me); I saw it three times (well, I WISH I did; that counts for something, right?).

Guess it's not for everybody, though. User ratings all around the block are poor.

I think the problem with your approach is expecting some kind of epic and junk. I mean, seriously, "Demon Barber"?

But hey, I'm a connaisseur, not a typical movie-goer. The general public should not see this movie.

You're kidding, right? This was the best movie I've seen in a LONG time! I thought it was great. I would definitely recommend seeing it. Unfortunately, the trailers advertised it as if it wasn't a musical, and maybe musicals just aren't your type of genre.

I might as well reply since it's been bumped already. I have nothing wrong with musicals, in fact, I like them. Looking back, the movie wasn't THAT bad... but in contrast to what I expected it to be, it wasn't good at all. It's like... expecting to hear Whitney Houston sing "I have nothing", and hearing Avril Lavigne sing it. While Avril Lavigne is a good singer, she's not Whitney Houston. Perhaps a strange example, but I was just disappointed with the movie.
