National Geographic Channel: Population Zero: 3/9 8 PM EDT

The preview of the show is pretty interesting. We have already seen from ancient civilization how Nature is just a few hundred years can take over, and almost erase any visible trace that there once was a civilization. Today we're a major force in the planet and it will be interesting to see in how much time Nature will be able to take completely over.

About twenty or twenty five years ago, a magazine, I think it was 'Popular Science', or maybe 'Popular Mechanics', had an article about how various landmarks would fail with no human intervention. Living near NYC at the time (or maybe having left just a year or two before) I paid attention to their prediction of how the WTC would fail.


They predicted eventual leaks in the PATH tubes, immersing the sub-structure in salt water for decades, which would weaken the buildings enough that eventually a strong windstorm, perhaps a hurricane, would topple the tower(s),

Is this it?. I know I saw something about this on Instapundit sometime ago , but I can't find the article. There was link to a four-part Youtube video about what would happen. I did d/l the videos, so maybe later I'll can find the Youtube videos.

So we are assuming the human race disappeared à lá Night of the Comet, right? If not, it is leaving out all the decomposing bodies as a variable.

Very interesting so far, but they left out one thing. Populations are growing right now very quickly, how did all the people die, and where did they all go?

Just flipped it over. It is pretty cool.

It's like the prequel to a documentary (mini-series, rather) I saw on the Discovery Channel a while ago of what Earth will look like far into the future. No humans, animals rule the world. It's pretty crazy.

That would probably be good scope for another documentary; this one, though, is showing what would happen if humanity just up and disappeared.

In general I would say that after we're gone the world is not going to look as nice as the program is depicting it. The program basically shows a world in which we magically disappear without any destruction. Our survival as an specie will most likely depend on ourselves since we already have the capacity to destroy out environment a few times over.
