Plane aborted per Special advisory #10 . . . graupel (soft hail), lightning, and extreme turbulence are forcing a return to base . . .

The thread title should probably be changed to reflect that the mission is over.

Changed to reflect the mission was aborted rather? I am very glad they aborted the mission! We do not need a repeat of Hurricane Janet 1955 (Navy HH plane went down in relatively the same area)

Yes, well, that's probably part of the problem. P-3s are almost as old as that accident is . . . and therefore the new 130s should hopefully do better . . .

Sometime soon... but I bet they are discussing whether or not to do that.

abort it. The scientific oddity of understanding the exact SLP or wind of this storm in the middle of the ocean and 2 days from land isnt worth a plane and ~7 pax.

I disagree... history must be recorded. The turbulence is just because it is rapidly intensifying.. once it reaches the upper-echelon Cat 5 level then it should be safe enough to fly into.

I agree for now. Safety needs to come first and they need to discuss their plans further for such extreme winds. We have a good idea on the intensity anyway. My current estimate is 150 kt/924mb.

I think its closer to 155 knots. I'm not alll together discounting the surface wind data.

yeah, espically in the discussion, it states that a dropsnode dropped in the SW quad, landed in the NE quad!

yes scorpion, when we know the storm is somewhat steady based on sat imaged, send the plane. The problem is we have the eclipse coming up and I wouldnt launch until the first post eclipse image shows something reasonable(not a pinhole eye and tops as cold wilma).

That's an excellent point - I hope they consider that when deciding on the next mission.

With that in mind - POD has next mission scheduled to leave at 11:00 pm EDT and in the storm from 1:00am to 4:00am EDT

FLIGHT THREE
A. 03/0600Z
B. AFXXX 0906A FELIX
C. 03/0300Z
D. 14.6N 74.6W
E. 03/0500Z TO 03/0800Z
F. SFC TO 10,000 FT

the sat apperence looks mostly unchanged, perhaps a little worse, over the last few hours. Rapid intensification is probably over and I would feel safe launching into this now, given that you have 2 more hours for the storm to stop RIing before intercept.

Can you tell us if there was any aircraft damage, or any more details on what they ran into?
