alaska_avo Significant unrest at Redoubt volcano continues and the volcano color code and alert levels remain at RED/WARNING. Over the last hour, we\'ve seen the seismic tremor change to a signal dominated by small, discrete events. Clouds obscure the webcam views of the summit, but new mudflows can be seen on the upper drift river. Although the ashfall advisory has expired, a large explosion may occur again at anytime. about 22 minutes ago from Twittermail

Surprising to find so few flight cancellations and diversions at Anchorage International. A large area in south central Alaska is under an aviation SIGMET.

Comtex SEATTLE, March 23, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ ----Alaska Airlines announced that the airline has canceled passenger flights in and out of the Alaska cities of Fairbanks, Bethel, Prudhoe Bay, Nome, Kotzebue and Barrow due to continued volcanic ash caused by last night's eruption of Mt. Redoubt.

The airline is currently operating flights south of Anchorage and throughout Southeast Alaska, however as conditions change these and all routes will be reevaluated. More than 45 flights were canceled due to the volcanic eruption of Mt. Redoubt affecting approximately 4,000 travelers.

"We are closely monitoring the weather and ash from Mt. Redoubt to assess our ability to safely operate flights in and out of Alaska and we will adjust flights as conditions change," said Ben Minicucci, chief operating officer and vice president of operations. "We are making every effort to re-accommodate passengers whose flight schedules have been disrupted."

Passengers booked on a canceled flight between March 22-24, may rebook prior to March 30, 2009, without penalty or apply for a full refund of the unused portion of their ticket. Passengers on new reservations and those scheduled for travel after March 31, 2009, who wish to change their flights, will be charged the applicable penalty and change fees. Passengers traveling on an Alaska Airlines Vacation should contact Vacations at 1-800-468-2248.

Alaska Airlines expects to resume flights throughout Alaska March 24, 2009, provided conditions allow. Operations will be evaluated throughout the evening and early morning and flight departure information will be posted at alaskaair.com.

Travelers are advised to check the status of flights before leaving home at alaskaair.com or 1-800-ALASKAAIR (1-800-252-7522). Specific information about flight changes related to the Mt. Redoubt volcano is available at alaskaair.com.

alaska_avo Seismic activity at Redoubt remains elevated and low amplitude volcanic tremor and small discrete earthquakes are occurring. No additional ash emissions have occurred since last evening. Somehow.....I just wouldn't want to do that flight. Especially in a jet assist chopper. Seems like any intake of ash could be critical to maintaining thrust and lift. But, I'd be willing to bet that there are volcanologists out there that would love to be with AVO right now!

Redoubt Volcano Latest Observations
2009-03-26 12:38:35

A large eruption of Redoubt volcano occurred at 09:24 AKDT (17:24 UTC) this morning. National Weather Service reports the cloud height to be at least 65,000 ft above sea level and pilot reports indicated a plume height of 60,000 ft. Since this event, a few smaller events have occurred but these did not generate plumes above about 20,000 feet.

The eruption at 9:24 AKDT also produced a lahar in the Drift River valley that was detected by seismic instruments.

An ashfall advisory is in effect until 4 PM for the western Kenai Peninsula. High level ash (above 30,000 feet) is forecast to pass over Anchorage, but is not expected to produce ash fall. For more information refer to the NWS Redoubt Coordination web page (http://pafc.arh.noaa.gov/volcano.php) for latest ash cloud information.

AVO is monitoring the situation closely, the observatory is staffed 24/7, and attempts to overfly the volcano will occur as soon as possible. More details on this mornings eruption also will be released on AVO's web page as soon as possible.

alaska_avo Seismicity is elevated. Tremor has subsided and discrete earthquakes are occurring. Clear views at the Hut camera show a gorgeous view of the volcano and current steam plume. The webcam also shows fresh lahar deposits on the Drift Glacier. There have been no other large explosions since this morning\'s large eruption at 9:24AM

Mount Redoubt volcano erupts twice
Published: March 27, 2009 at 8:45
ANCHORAGE, Alaska, March 27 (UPI) -- Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano erupted twice Thursday, sending a black cloud of ash over the Kenai Peninsula.

Officials said commercial airlines were halted nearly all flights in south-central Alaska.

Following an initial blast at 8:34 a.m., a huge explosion 50 minutes later sent ash soaring 65,000 feet above sea level, The Anchorage Daily News reported.

Alaska Airlines canceled all flights in and out of Anchorage for the rest of the day. Other airlines canceled or diverted flights as well.

The newspaper reported that U.S. Weather Service released an ashfall advisory to aviators for an area that encompassed all of the Kenai Peninsula and parts of Prince William Sound -- as well as a portion of a major air route from Seattle to Anchorage.

Anchorage International Airport remained officially open.

No ash was expected to fall on Anchorage but late in the day a "faint trace" was reported outside the Alaska Volcano Observatory on the Alaska Pacific University campus, the Daily News said.

Interesting that March 27 is the same day of the '64 quake. Redoubt is part of the Ring of Fire.

Not sure if anyone has seen the pictures from this event from Redoubt or not...but I found this one really interesting. It was taken from one of the GOES satellites, when it was over China. You can see the ash cloud jutting upward. This was taken from one of the March 26 eruptions.
