There is nothing they can do with a Cat 4 or 5.

rain is the issue with levees not wind folks

Actually it's an island. :D And yes there are several very high peaks on Hispaniola.

I'm meaning the peninsula sticking out on the west side of haiti...

Yeah I realized it later. Still, the highest mountains are near the boarder region with the Dominican Republic.

Cat 4 or 5 winds pushing a storm surge into the Miss Delta is an issue for Levee's!!!!![/quote]

This makes me nervous.

>>Just breezing in and trying to catch up. Do we have any kind of guesstimate time frame yet?

Wanna pick that up at the official site of the NHC. This is all speculation (too).

>>So I would suppose JB has this going up the East Coast to Hit NYC???

Somebody posted earlier that he's given up his FL theory and saying with the ECMWF showing systems on both sides, it's probably something in the middle - if I recall the comment as posted. Anyway, off to view the 12z ECMWF.

Exactly, you must remember the topography of that coastal area, any Cat 4 or 5 coming up from the south will be piling water up from the ESE into Lake Ptrain (?), throw in the direct surge from up the Delta and you got problems NO!

Ill apolagise in advance if i have possted this in the wrong area

Well im going to florida (orlando) on the 3rd september for 2 weeks and i have been browsing the web only to find hurricane gustav. Now ill be the first to admit that i know pretty much nothing about hurricanes apart from the is alot of wind and rain, so i was wondering if one of you guys who know much more could tell me if it will affect our plans.

any help would be much appreciated,
thanks :D

Good Luck Danny. Some of us here are also concerned about plans for the weekend around the Beach area in Alabama.
It's a legitimate concern. I hope all goes well for you. I will just keep watching the system closey, and cancel our trip if needed. So, stay tuned to your weather updates.

Not true....... Maybe when talking about the Mississippi River rain is the issue. However, Lake Pontchartrain is what broke the levees and it happened when the wind out of the east piled up too much water in the lake.

I'm so sick of national misconceptions.

People, no levees broke! It was 3 poorly built 12 inch thick concrete flood walls! Yes, they were about 12 inches thick. No earthen levees broke.

Also, you could tear down every levee and flood wall in New Orleans right now, and the city would not flood. They are not needed on a daily basis. The only time water EVER touches a levee or flood wall is when it rains or a monster hurricane approaches. They don't hold water out of the city otherwise.

This isn't a levy dispute. Let's get back on track with Gustav. We have NO IDEA if this will hit NOL yet. Way too soon to be discussing details of damage from a storm that's a week away.

Dean4Storms, thats the current offical motion I believe though I suspect the motion right now may be a touch further west closer to 300 but its getting slowly harder to tell thanks to its eye weakening overland pretty quickly.

It'll be interesting to see how sharply it ramps up once back over water again, such a small system in a very condusive set-up could deepen again pretty quickly.

There seems to be a nice ULL to his NE...Looks like there is some kind of squeeze play going on here. He is stuck inbtween these features. The ridge axis is just to his NW....before then dosn't look like he will change directions.
