Galveston residents go to 47th & Broadway to be bused off the island to Austin. Residents can go to any city bus stop to end up at the collection point on Broadway.

Ike has the potential to knock out power to millions. Such a broad area of hurricane force winds...even ts winds can result in power loss...is going to mean people are going to be without power for a while. The resources needed for such an undertaking will require a multi-state effort to assist the local power company. Wilma knocked out power to 3 million in south florida and it took weeks to get everyone back up....with most folks being in the dark at 1-2 weeks in my neighborhood. Ike could knock out power to twice that amount of people.

There are a few things that I wish I had had after wilma that would have been a huge help - a phone that is not cordless and so doesn't need to be charged and a car charger for my cell phone. Make sure you have those before the storm hits!

Amen! There are so many things I learned after Wilma knocked us sideways...we were 16 days without power at my house and I swear I went loopy towards the end.

Anyway, I know I sound like a broken record, but I beg everyone who is staying around for Ike to check out the Storm2K Hurricane Preparation thread. There are so many good tips in there and you might learn something now that will make all the difference later.

Seriously, the time you spend getting ready now will be well worth your while...ask anyone who went through a major storm.

As for tree damage - it's inevitable and sometimes unpredictable. Be prepared to saw, saw, saw. Don't panic though....it's only wood! A good chain saw and a couple of strong draggers can work wonders on a downed tree or two. Or several.

Ike is forecasted now to have a huge impact on the oil rigs and processing capabilities. That is nearly the worst case scenario for those. Look for a huge rise in gas prices very quickly that will persist over the next few months. This will probably have a bigger overall $$ impact than Katrina in my opinion.

Charley was a Cat 5, the most intense hurricane to ever make landfall in US, not the same storm as IKe

Doubtful, the price spike is usually shortlived. There have been endless storms rolling thru the Gulf that were supposed to have huge impacts on gas prices and did not. If a bunch of refineries do get wiped out, there will be some impact, but in most cases the threat is overstated, FYI, the price of oil is DOWN again today,
