I had about 5 minutes of slow page loads and everything has been fine here since.

With the large database size we have (now over 75 MB), the site rarely slows down. I do have one question: Hardly anyone ever uses the VereorLordoftheRings skin - would it free up much space if that was deleted?

The size of our database isn't really an issue right now. We run a MySQL database at work about 10 times this size without any performance issues. The intermittent slowdown is more thn likely either a server or bandwidth issue on the hosting side. Not much we can do about either of those except live with it :-)

To see if there were any ways to reduce the database size, but it looks like it's not a problem for now.
