Chatroom Problem

#1 Postby ColdFront77 » Sun Jun 15, 2003 6:10 pm

I am in the chatroom and can't see what is going on and what I "say" is not being displayed for me to see...

Has anyone else ever had this problem before?

I deleted my temporarily internet files, cleared history and deleted cookies and I was able to see what myself and others were saying (I generally do it very often, as I mentioned in another forum).

This is the first time this has happened to me.

Now I am able to see what I'm saying, but not everyone else?

Edit: Logged out and back on again, once again able to communicate with others.

Tom I know I have had server problems with the chatroom - as in the chatroom servers. You are doing what I would suggest. I know lately I have been chatting and don't see any responses until after a short delay.

If you continue having problems - let me know and I'll contact Dana at stormdancing and see if there is any solution to any additional problems you might have....

Thank you, Particia.

It happened a few more times since my last post here and I did what I indicated.... disconnected and reconnected right away opposed to "deleting temorary internet files," "deleting cookies" and or "clearing history."

After reconnecting I was able to see what I and others were saying (it occurred a couple more times).

Last night was fine.

what you guys are experiencing is what is called lag. Lag is when your "chat client", in this case a Java applet, gets out of sync with the chat server. Lag is not uncommon and there generally isn't much you can do aside from disconnecting and connecting again

Actually I think we are dealing with two different problems here.
Not seeing your response immediately or seeing a burst of lines come across the screen is lag. Lag is the time it takes for your words to reach between the servers and be displayed on your and others screens. It can be because of a number of reasons and happen in a number of places beginning with your ISP and moving through the many hops your actual words take in reaching the chat servers and then back to your screen again. Reconnecting to your ISP will sometimes give you better response but not always. It may not be your ISP. It could be the internet lines the servers are using. We could call AT&T or UUnet and complain, but....... LOL.
This is a trace from me in SO Indiana to the Stormdancing Server in New Jersey. As you can see there are 11 nodes or stops along the way. My words go from SO Indiana to Chicago, To Madison, WI, to NY, to NJ - then back to me and magically appear on my screen. Anywhere along this roadmap service can be slowed or "lagged" for any number of reasons.

What Coldfront is talking about not being able to see anything at all until he reboots etc, is a problem on his end. I suspect memory. A full hard drive where Windows does not have enough free space to operate can cause symptoms similar to this. Also like CF said, clearing cache and temp files is a must to keep your computer running in top shape.

I encourage everyone to download and use mIRC to chat on the servers as it's more efficient, gives you more flexibility and choices. It's free to download and will not expire even when the Nag screen comes up. It's a very small program. It's cheap enough to register - $20 but not necessary to continue using it.

The Java client we are using is the best of this type that is on the market but it does leave a lot to be desired, once you see and use mIRC.

Thanks for the infor Dana! I have both PIRCH and mIRC but prefer PIRCH. Either is a better option than Java IMO. :-)

I've never used pIRCh, but some do like it better. My only bugaboo with it it the fact that it has not been updated in years.

Still beats Java I'm sure.

TEST TEST TEST

#12 Postby ColdFront77 » Tue Jun 17, 2003 10:52 pm

I used mIRC a few times and last time I tried for some reason (even knowing how to access the Storm2K Chatroom) I was unable to get in. I will try accessing it every so often, when I feel like it. :D
