DR can handle a lot more than Haiti can.

when the french colonized the island they commenced massive deforestation. they also use land for cultivation of crops. but this deforested the whole country. the dominican rep. enacted strict logging and land-use laws, so they arent nearly deforested. if u look at a sat or google earth map of the island, u can clearly see the border between the two contries. one side(dominican) is clearly green with healthy forests. then, along a clear line is a barren brown, dead region. this has been the reason for the huge death tolls in haiti. mudslides and flash flodding. theres nothing in the soil to soak up the moisture/energy.

What a day!
It started this early morning and kept on bullying. Very strong sustained winds and some insane gusts. No power on shore but in a strange way the marina wifi keeps on working. I have my airX wind-turbine that keeps my power up.
All afternoon there was local radio with reports from all over the island. One by one the all stopped. The reports were getting more and more distressed. Roofs flying, flooding and more.
Many cell phone areas are non functioning.
Maybe it's because of the darkness but it seems that the storm is intensifying. We had a short period with less activity. (not the eye) but now.....oh.........
Stay safe everybody.

First, welcome to Storm2k. Is still early to know for sure where Tomas will track on the long range. But stay tuned for the next advisories to see what they say about the future track. I really hope that Tomas dissipates in the Caribbean Sea and doesn't affect any more places after it moved thru the islands today.

Hi guyclaude08. I was born in D.R., but I live in Puerto Rico. I'm very worried about Tomas also. I'm sorry to tell you that there is a moderate to high chance of a direct hit. I hope all your family, friends and everyone doesn't get hurt.
Forgot to add:
Just my opinion as an amateur. I ask you to keep reading storm2k and paying attention to the NHC bulletins.

Welcome, guyclaude08. Although the forecast path and intensity doesn't look good for Haiti right now, remember that it is way too early to be sure, and the forecast path and strength will be adjusted many times over the next few days. The main thing to do if you live in Haiti is to have plans on where you can go that has higher ground that is more protected when flooding comes, since the main threat to you will be very bad flooding.
