I think it was a tropical storm since last night, but the NHC did a good job deciding to keep it a hurricane until right at landfall, because that keeps people from thinking it weakened/it won't be that bad.

Just goes to show, again, how bad a tropical storm CAN be.

Better save that satellite picture, you don't see that very often. :double:

Bryan Norcross set the record straight with the anchor on MSNBC....Irene made landfall as a 65 mph tropical storm in NYC...not as a hurricane. The anchor said, 'can't we just say that a hurricane made landfall in NYC?' Bryan looked like he was about to go off on her. He said the NHC put out the statement below...

REPORTS FROM AN AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT AND NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATE THAT THE CENTER OF IRENE
MOVED OVER NEW YORK CITY AROUND 900 AM EDT
...1300 UTC. IRENE HAS
WEAKENED TO A TROPICAL STORM AND THE ESTIMATED INTENSITY AT
LANDFALL WAS 65 MPH
...100 KM/H.

AF aircraft are 96-99 models. All aircraft have problems -- they are made to fly, not sit on the deck for copious amounts of time. There are times where NOAA has fixed the center when AF had to turn back and vice versa. This is the very reason why CARCAH schedules NOAA and AF simultaneously when the storm approaches land.

Thanks to all who colaborated in this effort to post all the data from recon of Irene. I know some had long nights and many hours posting and that is not easy to do.

If anyone has DirectTV, they have a special channel for Irene setup where they are showing local news coverage from different areas around the northeast. Right now, they are showing local news out of NYC. On our lineup, it is channel 259. Just thought I would share this information.

Radar signatures seem to suggest 5-6 inches have already fallen in NYC.

4 out of the 6 people in the house got out safely (firefighters were using a boat). Swift water rescues. Then CNN cut to something else as they were heading out for the final 2. Just switched back, all 6 people in the house are now safe. One of the locals said it had never flooded there before. (Was in Elmsford, NY).

They were told to get out.
