I would presume they will also be using the data to help with their classifications and advisories. I haven't seen anything that said it was strictly for science and research, but I could be wrong. Of course it is new this year so you could be right.

Re: ATL: FOURTEEN - Tropical Depression - Discussion
I have a question. Is the center at 16.3N 43W or at 16.3N 46W. I can't tell. Seems in last few frames low level clouds seem to be getting pulled into 16.3N 46W?

Looks like fish storms all around for September. Which is a good thing. Hopefully TD 14 will be a good girl and follow the predicted track and not bother anybody.

Is there a decoder available for the Global Hawk data?

Re: ATL: FOURTEEN - Tropical Depression - Discussion
IMO I still think TD14 doesn't deepen, misses the trough and strengthens steadily. My track says what I think.

Your track is already south of current position of storm and heading. I would think a bit more to the East is more likely.

That was my 11am track, which is based off the last coordinates. I made that at 11. My current track will be released later today with a track similiar to nhc.

Re: ATL: FOURTEEN - Tropical Depression - Discussion
Should be slow to intensify due to the large size of the cyclone and the SAL to the east of the depression....should stay at sea I hope.....MGC

Developing slowly.......I am hoping this doesn't pull another "Leslie" - that would be really disappointing - not because we want strong storms to hit land, but we just want to see something amazing, while staying AWAY from landmasses. And, IMO, Leslie was simply uninteresting, to say the least.

Re: ATL: FOURTEEN - Tropical Depression - Discussion
IMO, this system shows we should have no more systems make the full trek across the atlantic. Also, how do you start a new topic, want to start one in the winter on a nor'easter perhaps?

Re: ATL: FOURTEEN - Tropical Depression - Discussion
This is why both SSD and Best Track upgraded to TS. This ASCAT was the key.

It will pull another Leslie, because TD14 is alive within the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. If this were a different season, maybe . It may look good now and have fine organization, but once it hits 55 knots BAM! No more good looks and fortune for this one. Until it reaches major hurricane status (if it does, probably not; maybe not even hurricane status) I won't follow it other than brief checks. Does it become a hurricane or will it underachieve during peak conditions with open water all around it?
Is this still considered a fish storm if it hit/affected the Cape Verde Islands as a tropical wave?

I would presume they are using the usual dropsondes. If they are then the usual decoder would be used. If not I haven't seen anything published about a new decoder.
