I do know parts of Cape May, Stamford, and Atlantic City are flooding. Barrier islands are flooding. Ocean City & Long Island as well. These are the ones I have seen and heard of.

It is being stated get off barrier islands now, as it will just get much worse. Others stay off the road! From Chris Christi.

How does this compare to Irene?

so, I'm not familiar with the New York Harbor area, but I am watching the NY Harbor webcam. There are lots of people out walking around, and what looks like a lot of cars.

Is this an area that is not going to flood? I thought the harbor area was in danger?

For the ATLANTIC basin she is. She's now the LARGEST storm ever recorded in the Atlantic basin.

Chris Christi states water is already 5 feet in places in Atlantic county.

It's very close to low tide now. The area is in danger, but that doesn't stop people.

A couple of likely records:

Largest TS strength windfield ever at US landfall.
Most northerly US landfall of severe storm with tropical origins.
Latest US landfall of severe storm with tropical origins.
Highest surge ever recorded at many places on the US East Coast, notably including Manhattan.

Most economically destructive US storm ever is not out of the question. It will certainly be top 10, and probably worst for the East Coast.

Yes on all points but #2, Hurricane Bob landfalled in Rhode Island and there have probably been others.

I'm monitoring police and EMS channels in Caroline, Dorchester and Queen Anne's Counties in Maryland, and there are reports of multiple roads already underwater in Talbot County - that is the Chesapeake Bay side of the Delmarva Peninsula. And still almost 24 hours before landfall. Amazing.

Cape May is taking a beating from flooding. These are from my friend who is still there, in the North Wildwood area. He said it's the highest he's seen it in 35 years with more to come... : (

Bob was only 962 mb at landfall, so much less severe. Any storm more severe than Sandy's likely landfall has been far to the south.

Edit: only should be in scare quotes, because 962 is pretty bad; just not nearly as bad a Sandy is likely to be.

And this is near low tide, correct? I'd be very concerned if I was there.
