A couple of likely records:

Largest TS strength windfield ever at US landfall.
Most northerly US landfall of severe storm with tropical origins.
Latest US landfall of severe storm with tropical origins.
Highest surge ever recorded at many places on the US East Coast, notably including Manhattan.

Most economically destructive US storm ever is not out of the question. It will certainly be top 10, and probably worst for the East Coast.

Add this:

Lowest atmospheric pressure recorded for a storm north of Cape Hatteras (943mb and still falling, surpasses 946mb by the Long Island Express)

Lower manhattan is 5 - 7 feet above sea level. All of the utilities in Manhattan are below ground. An 11 - 13 foot surge will put most of Bayonne, lower Jersey City and Hoboken under water. And that's not even considering what will happen to the subway system. Power out, no pumps.

Here is a police, fire and EMS feed from Atlantic City. Will probably be interesting to listen to over the next 24-48 hours.

11am discussions mentions already well defined cold and warm fronts within Sandy. Extratropical transition is underway. I'm probably the only one on the board who agrees with the non-tropical warnings. I've been telling people to treat them exactly like you would a hurricane warning.

Hey guys, I need some quick help. I have a friend who is out in Long Island and I'm worried that he's being stupid by not evacuating. Can someone please link me to SLOSH models of the area and/or tell me how bad its expected to be? His street is 600 Chauncy Lane 11559. Thanks a lot guys

Hey guys. Haven't been around here since Isaac, but I have been keeping track of Sandy the past few days. I don't want to sound alarmist, but I think it is hard to overestimate how devastating this has the potential to be. I hope everyone around there has taken heed to the forecasts. My prayers are with you all.

But I suspect it will beat that figure tonight. This is a world event. And, Cylconeye, I hope things are calming down in PR.

Yes, but Sandy - according to the models - will remain a Frankenstorm. "Normal" ET storms get their energy from the atmosphere. Sandy will continue to generate a lot of energy from oceanic heat, as indicated by predictions for a strong warm core all the way to landfall and abrupt weakening once she's ashore. In a sense, she won't become ET, she'll add ET while still being tropical.

Getting gusty on the south side of Cape Cod. Trees are tossing, but no rain yet -- just drizzle. Power outages being reported around the area.
NSTAR outage map is getting more colorful every time I look.

Off I go to check my boat and get some pictures. Four hours until the predicted peak.

what about westhampton beach? does anyone know about the road called "dune road" there?
http://pics4.city-data.com/mapszip/zma2916.png

if you look at the image, dune road is that thin barrier piece of land. it is a sandbar that was overcome by water temporarily in previous storms.
