This is probably a stupid question but the second recon flight NOAA9 Gulfstream IV-SP which looks to be heading back to Florida att his time did a different flight pattern zigzag and looks like around the outside of Isaac with numerous dropsonde compared to the usual X formation I'm used to seeing like the previous recon flight AF300. I'm looking at the visual graphic on http://tropicalatlantic.com/recon/live/ . Can someone explain why this flight pattern is different and what they might be looking for. Thanks

NOAA9's been sampling upper air data in the Bahama's then around Haiti checking for pressure, temperatures, winds, etc to be fed into the models. They run various patterns as compared to the regular recon flights.

that was the G-IV, I believe. It was sampling the atmosphere.

Their still sampling back up in the Bahama's. Looks like about 25 - 30 dropsondes so far.

Ok thanks for the explaination on second flight, nice to know my guess as to what the flight data was for, wasn't too far of base, I'd had a thought it might have something to do with assisting models for more acurate track.

Of course when recon leaves, the convection explodes! Grr...I hope the plane makes it in before landfall/weakening!

Also, I know we've received quite a few questions on this:

A block of instruction on Zulu time (Also referred to as UTC on here and elsewhere), and how to interpret it:
