That's because the photo is from the Bahamas...

A LOT worse. It's going to get worse throughout the day into the evening and night.

The weather channel is reporting that it's moving much faster now....eye may hit coast in just a few hours. Power blinked on and off, but is back on now. Seems like South Jersey is getting the worst by far. We're not too far north of Atlantic City..maybe 60 miles. I thought it would be worse. I experienced Charley, Frances and Jean while living in Orlando and all three were worse than this. Charley was much, much worse.

Again, the picture is from Freeport in the Bahamas (please see preceding page). A nice reminder to folk is to please give the location of the images (AND the source!) so that confusion like this does not spread!

If those were my glass doors I'd be backing them up with some bracing.

Basically Bryan Norcross said it best...at least for the Battery it doesn't matter since the direction of the wind will be S to N if it moves in before high tide...and you are still going to have the strong wind, so it is actually possibly a less favorable condition. It will likely be a little helpful for N. J. and Long Island Sound.

Wow, the person taking that picture has to be freaking out!!! I've been thnking of a way to seal a CBS home around impact doors to keep water out. I know it would be difficult but possible b/c that glass will likely hold up. Amazing picture!!!

Wouldn't it be cool if he got a picture with a fish looking in??? :D

Are there palm trees up in the NE?? Suspicious picture!!

some shore points do have palm trees, either species that are cold hardy (and there are several), or they just replace them every spring.

sorry--just saw it was in the bahamas.

Well, New Jersey has never experienced Charley, Frances or Jeanne and it is rare that we experience any kind of direct hit from a tropical system. From your experience from living in Orlando and of hurricanes, I would assume that you know that the Northeastern quadrant where YOU are living is the worst. Plus, I would think that you would not have to ask how much worse this is going to be. Read up on the storm history of NJ. The NWS is still calling for extraordinary tides. Being in Red Bank, you should be able to see/tell the buildup along the shore line of housing and business which will sustain heavy damage. From your own personal experience, what do YOU think it's going to be like? Please share.

Well I have been out of pocket for awhile but wow, what a way to almost end the hurricane season. This time the NE will not get a glancing blow like usual but a direct impact. Can you see it, look mom its snowing but we are in a hurricane. Might be one for the history books.

Radar (scroll down in link) suggests a movement just N of due W...extrapolation would give landfall right at the mouth of Delaware Bay, which would be very bad for Atlantic City, Assateague Island, Brigantine, Sandy Hook, and other communities:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it common practice to take large vessels out to sea versus keeping them tied up during large storms, as it is generally a safer bet to ride it out and not risk breaking moorings and wreaking all kinds of havoc at dock?

I HIGHLY doubt the crew of this tall ship took the vessel out for a joy ride.

That was my belief and I didn't interpret this as being joy ride when they took it out to sea.

One thing to look for with this as opposed to a pure tropical system will be the length of the event. The extra-tropical processes may help keep it going after landfall.
