Hmmm...it was moving at 28mph...and was about 30 miles away 2hrs ago...yet its still 'offshore'...something doesn't seem to match up there IMO.

Either way strongest winds have whipped into the New York/Long island region now just as the models were forecasting andthe surge is really increasing at a rate, such a shame.

Look at the green line. Sharp rise in the difference between expected and observed and not leveling off yet.

Remember how Seidel, Roker and co. were out at Point Pleasant Beach, NJ earlier? NBC's national news special just aired their last segment they were able to transmit out of there. The ocean had completely washed away the beach and dune, and was now running into the hotel where the camera and truck had been set up all day. This aired about 7:17 PM EDT.

NYC's electricity systems underground are in danger too.

The "eye" of what was Sandy made landfall...the larger scale gyro is still coming, though.

Yep tolakram, still got about a foot of normal tide to go so even if the surge stopped increasing now and levelled off, we are still going above 12ft!

Could be a lot worse if parts are inundated with Salt Water. Corrosive and an excellent high-voltage conductor!
