From Tri-State Weather:
Numerous maydays being called by the New York City Fire Department on Coney Island. The whole island is reportedly submerged. Battalion 41 says no more FDNY personnel will respond to the island.

A couple friends of mine who live in the Murray Hill area of Manhattan just posted on their Facebook walls that they lost power. This is a pic one of them posted:

Report: Mantoloking Bridge taken out by floating house

Ocean County Administrator Carl W. Block said county officials believe a house has floated into the Mantoloking Bridge. 'We believe that to be the case,' Block said. He said county officials are heading to the area now to assess the situation.

I can only imagine the areas being hardest hit are unable to be reached at this time by rescue teams as well as the media. Daybreak tomorrow will be scary.

Yeah, I remember Shepherd Smith on Bourbon Street saying New Orleans had dodged a bullet from Katrina. But as he was saying that, levees were breeching and people were starting to die.

I've been wondering all evening how bad this will be in terms of death and destruction. Hopefully not as bad as Katrina but probably much worse than Ike.

It is official...

The Battery Tunnel is not all that is getting water.

The Subway systems have been hit, water is rushing into them.

As a note, they updated that they did get the generators/emergency lighting working, but they couldn't get the pump working and to send more pumps over. (unclear if it meant there was only one pump, or if one of multiple pumps isn't working). Source: FDNY Radio.

The NHC will NOT report on the "post trypical cyclone" f/k/a HURRICANE SANDY past 11:00 pm; the hydrometeorology reports begin at 5:00 am tomorrow. Where, pray tell, are citizens to obtain updates other than media outlets during the gap? The terminology police will not assist public awareness of the danger.

Full blackout in Southern Manhattan (for those w/o backup generators). conEdison affected customers jumps to ~285K. Although this number is clearly lagging about 30min+ behind.

Sky cam confirms! Have a look:

From the @WSJWeather twitter:

Town of Islip official: A rescue vehicle was lost (overturned) en route to a rescue on Fire Island (via 1010 wins)

[NOTE: Fire Island had mandatory evacuations... sigh]

It appears we are witnessing a catastrophic disaster unfolding right before us!!  Can't believe some of the reports rolling in, total chaos at this point.

I still have power where I'm at but winds starting to pick up with some gusts.
