We are smack in the middle of this statewide storm, what is your point?
Can you pick up some generators and drive down here to help your fellow citizens?

My post was in response to people returning hurricane supplies and/or blaming news channels for not being prepared.

As for the personal attack at my willingness to help fellow citizens, I have been in my own way. I also have many times in the past including doing volunteer disaster relief for those that lost there homes to a hurricane and being all up and down damaged areas doing damage assessment while six months pregnant. One can be willing to help those in need and also believe it is not out of line to expect people to take personal responsibility for preparedness.

It was not a personal attack.

Peace

Yeah and they also say child birth is painful. But until your in it you don't really get it, and if you have you forget. Also every storm is different so one is different from the ones you been in previously. This one surprised me, even though I been hearing it for days, and have been through 3 others in 04. And I am fully prepared because I was hearing about it. But yep I am still surprised by her punch here in Central FL

Vero Beach getting slammed right now I knew the GFS was onto something. Sustained winds 60mph gusting up to 90.... We are experiencing a category 2 Hurricane on Eastern central Florida...

I'm not seeing a lot of commentary from posters in Orlando at this point despite infrared and radar imagery showing the core of Irma headed their way. Is it just past bedtime, are communications down, or did I become too accustomed to the frantic pace of the last week?

I'm also curious whether the strong convection on the east side of Irma and the weak convection on the west side of Irma is strong enough have any impact on her track, or whether it's entirely up to outside steering currents that are well-modeled at this point.

I thought that was the weirdest thing! We're right up against a nature preserve and the frogs are putting on a symphony right now!

I think the second most surprising thing was learning there isn't any lightening in a hurricane, or at least a VERY minimal amount.

Duration will be longer though and more widespread. Charley's winds were in a 15 mile wide swath and only lasted about 30-60 minutes.

agreed. I'd expect a wider swath of less severe damage. But I doubt there will be the severe damage like the destroyed airport terminal we saw with Charley

99% wind 1% rain to add onto that as well here in Vero. Power went out(6pm), winds died down (8pm) thought we were all clear. Then I notice the gusts were strong. Didn't check to see where the hurricane was til 11pm and my jaw dropped when I realized where the storm was

Still fortunate enough to have power In Orlando. These gusts are INSANE. A tree fell right in front of my door. Gutters flying off my building as well and water up to nearly my back door. Fingers crossed our power stays on, we're right across from sea world so everything is under ground.

The downtown is flooded in the same manner as Matthew or worst, was just watching live on news4jax, the have a reporter on the ground. I'm based close to 95 and SR16 and not aware of any flooding around me.

you are experiencing a strong tropical storm

People often underestimate tropical storm force winds. 40, 50 mph sustained winds can be quite scary (that's about the most I've gone through).

Polk county again, Lakeland to be exact. Extremely intense sounding winds outside. This is nuts! We are boarded up for the most part so we cannot really see what's going on. We are thankfully in the small percentage of people who still have power. This just makes me really wonder what people who rode this out in the keys experienced!!!

Second this. Personal responsibility is lacking. If you know severe weather of whatever sort strikes your location regularly, you should feel obligated to stock up and maintain enough supplies and equipment to last a reasonable amount of time. If you cannot afford it all at once, budget for it. It should always be on hand. You can't eat an X-Box. In our area, we know it could be days before the drifts or uprooted trees or power lines are cleared off the road. We expect it to happen every couple of years (it does) and we prepare for it. My prep list is different from a hurricane zone, but no less important. The responsibility falls on me, my household and my neighbors to make sure we are safe and to have contingency plans if we can't stay here. As an aside, I know nearly every first responder around here.
I would feel terrible about having to put their lives in jeopardy because I didn't heed warnings or prepare my own domicile. :flag:

You are good near 95. (Flood wise)

There is a reason they built it where they did.

Request for information: any preliminary reports on how LaBelle, particularly the senior living RV Park on the west side of town fared?

It looked like it was just getting pummeled by the eyewall remnants on radar.Ft. Myers TV specifically mentioned it a couple of hours ago as a location likely to be hard hit. Family has a place there. They are not in Florida now, delayed their journey south.
