What's a CMG?

(I know a CME is a coronal mass ejection but I'm pretty sure this is unrelated.)

CMG stands for cold medium grey which is the second coldest temperature a storms cloud top can reach, CDG (Cold Dark Grey) being the coldest. It signifies an extremely intense storm.

I keep meaning to learn the Dvorak technique, but I haven't had the time. I'm supposed to be thinking about astrophysics, not atmospheric physics.

Unfortunately this season keeps drawing my attention to the latter. Maybe I can convince my advisor these are all images of galaxies? (Too late)

Don't know why this was a double post. Okay fine, mobile, I'll add some more content. Bipolar outflows in galaxies are generally taken to be signs of intense star formation. While spiral galaxies are often compared to hurricanes in appearance, the physics behind them is very different.

Man I did not expect this storm to be able to maintain this long much less keep improving. It's core has it's coldest clout tops yet! This thing is an ACE monster. Prayers to everyone who went through this storm and those that still have to.

Interesting to see NCAR/UCAR chiming in with the MPAS model...

There's some CDG in the western eye wall which is indicating intensification

Yes, really not good.

Does anybody know what the highest Dvorak rated storm in the Atlantic was? Gilbert? Whatever the record is this has to be giving it a run for its money.

If you need a source for the Dvorak Technique, here is a great module from MetEd (registration is free!).

Ok...today I'm thinking I need to go get plywood. Its looking more and more like we are going to have a landfall here. Is anyone else in the area doing the same? SC Gov. just declared a state of emergency here

As a side note...is there a thread topic for people to discuss preparation for this storm other than the discussion thread?

He posted this morning on a Caribbean thread in the US & Caribbean Weather Forum. Said it would probably be his last post for a few days as power outages were already occurring in the San Juan area.

I just saw online somewhere that this is the longest stretch of time an Atlantic storm has maintained a Cat 5 intensity

I'd like to say I've maintained Category 5 intensity for two months, but my radius of maximum winds is only about half an inch so it's not much of an achievement.

Hey Folks - Looking for a little help. Have some family in Ft Lauderdale that I'm trying to convince to take a drive for a few days. Based on the model, Its likely a long drive to anywhere outside of the cone -- but where would be a reasonable place to hold up for a few days be? Anyone booked hotel rooms recently and where might there be availability?

Yes, Gilbert was analyzed to be T8.0 by TAFB as shown in its report and it was the only Atlantic hurricane to ever received a T8.0

I have some relatives that found rooms in Lake County, which is closer to the West coast. ( and much further N than Ft Lauderdale!)
