This video of the stadium effect is absolutely insane. I've never seen anything like this. Not even the famous video of Elena's eye comes close to this...

Not as big as Columbus for sure, but almost 200,000 in Metro Albany. They had some very bad tornados about two years ago that really hurt the community. Lots of big, old trees down there.

The clearness of sky inside the eye is amazing. Being right under the eye of a potentially CAT5 tropical cyclone is all chasers’ dream

These next gen satellites are giving everyone never before seen angles of storms. Look at this shot as Michael makes land fall and you can see the shore pass under the eye!

This is so sad that so many people did not evacuate. Unbelievable!!

Evacuation is expensive. When we evacuated for Matthew it cost us $1000 for travel, hotel and food for a family of 3 and the hotels gouging with pet fees. It ended up not causing much damage and we lost power for two days max. For Florence we spent another $700+ and nothing happened. We barely got any rain.

I make pretty decent money and have a healthy emergency fund, so it was merely an inconvenience. If you live on a fixed income or you're poor and don't have any family nearby, what are you going to do? I'm not saying that they shouldn't listen to authorities, but I'm just telling you that it's not that easy for everyone. If the government is telling people to get out, they need to do what California does for folks who evacuate wildfires and reimburse them full or partially for evacuation expenses. That would go a long way in ensuring that everyone pays heed to warnings.

This is coming from someone whose parents decided to ride out Florence because they didn't want to incur the expenses from evacuating and didn't want to be a "burden" on us even though we offered to cover their expenses. And everytime thy're "right" and nothing happens, it emboldens them for the next time an order is issued.
Most cities will transport you free to a shelter that's free where they feed you for free.

It's not comfortable but neither is death, or trying to survive after the storm somewhere that was hit by it.

Not a Official or meteorologist. All opinions and statements are my own. Consult the experts.

That’s assuming the city has enough resources to actually evacuate/shelter the entire city’s vulnerable/marginalized population.

That is sometimes not the case...

Still is better to withhold judgment in my opinion. We all say we would evacuate if it were us but are we really sure that we would in all circumstances?

Anyone heard from Aric Dunn? his FB page for the hurricane has not been updated or anything I can see on this thread since he was thinking about moving from Port Saint Joe to Panama City. He's always a voice of reason on this forum, after Brett Adair's situation would like to know he is OK

IIRC, Wilma got stronger as it went across the Everglades. The Big Bend also has a whole bunch of very swampy 'land' (a big reason why so few people live there by Florida standards) which is very warm right now so the topography doesn't generate as much friction after landfall as you'd get in other places.

There are some builders in the Panhandle who were putting hurricane clips in the roofs even before they were mandated by post-Andrew code. My home built in 1982 has them.
