We measured a couple of 45 kt gusts and the strongest was 51 kts. I'm in Cebu City. Moderate rain. Strong gale.

Mangkhut will be the strongest typhoon for area in the NE since Typhoon Gordon 1989
Note: I honestly think Gordon is a tad stronger than Mangkhut though it got underestimated by JMA and JTWC.

I think we could see a very low pressure reading from this one - sub-900 is a distinct possibility if any of the chasers (Josh, James or the PAGASA chasers) managed to get into the eye.

1987 TY Nida's national pressure record is in jeopardy

Hell I could see it being 885-890. This storm peaked at the right time.

May I ask?? Why are winds approaching 100 km/h in Cebu? Is this a mesocyclone? TS-force winds have been on for over two hours.

Josh is headed for Gonzaga and the muni hall there. We felt it was the best spot to intercept the eye. Going to Santa Ana was becoming to dangerous. Not that the drive to gonzaga will be easy.

Now I would say even Labor Day Hurricane's pressure record might also be in jeopardy

Looks about the same as Meranti. This typhoon lived up to its expectations.

Conditions as of 1600 UTC at Josh's Buguey location: 34 kt (63 km/h) gusting to 74 kt (137 km/h). Pressure 983 mb. So not surprising the road was blocked...

On the other hand, the northward shift in track is putting Pearl river delta at great risk of direct impacts. Mangkhut could be worse than Typhoon Hato for that region if it manages to keep the inner core intact after crossing Luzon.

Josh's location seems to be just south of Buguey. Looks like he is in the right spot to get the centre:

HWRF is back to normal now and it initializes current pressure near 906mb. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

How it intensified despite having an EWRC is just a testament of the magic of the Philippines Sea effect
